Study Sustainable Energy Technologies abroad in the UK - study sustainable energy in England

The decision that changed my life forever

A few years ago I attended a postgraduate fair for studying abroad in Guadalajara, Mexico. I had already attended many other similar events, but with no luck and so I went there unconvinced by the many colourful flyers for studying abroad. This time, however, I received a contact card from Across the Pond.

I emailed Across the Pond and they walked me through the whole process, from the baby steps of applying to CONACYT and British universities, to the larger steps of overseeing and advising me on my applications, letters of recommendation and helping me through the student visa application process once I got selected by CONACYT. The whole process was lengthy, but I was not alone at any point; Across the Pond was there every step of the way to help me and even put me in touch with other Mexicans who planned to study at the same university before I even set foot in the UK. When it came to selecting a university, it was between two: The University of Aberdeen in Scotland and the University of Southampton, in the south of England. Both are excellent choices academically, but I chose Southampton for three personal reasons: its proximity to London, its milder climate compared to Scotland and finally, the fact that it had a Premier League football team.

When I finally moved to Southampton, I was very excited but a little nervous, since it was a new country and continent I did not know. However, I was not alone within the first few days of arriving, thanks to the other Mexican students that Across the Pond put me in touch with. Finding a place to live and people to live with was one less thing for me to do, since I rented a room through one of the university halls of residence, Wessex Lane, which was done months before arriving.

My accommodation was ten minutes away from the university’s main campus. Situated in the northern and greenest part of the city, between two beautiful parks, it was a modern and convenient bubble of students who always wanted to socialise. There was even a pub and bar/restaurant for students on campus, which made it much easier to meet up between activities and classes. There were facilities like a gym, swimming pool and sports rooms on campus. But without a doubt, one of the best aspects of university life was the student societies. There are societies to celebrate every possible hobby, culture, religion or interest. I joined the Mexican Society (Mexsoc), which of course allowed me to meet even more Mexicans. I was always surprised to see how many Mexicans and other Latin Americans were studying at the university - there were hundreds at every party. Out of all the societies, the Mexsoc parties were definitely the biggest and most popular events, attracting students from every country. Through Mexsoc events, you could meet international and local students, which can be difficult to do on your own. Through the Mexsoc, I met Latin American, European and Asian students, who I am still in touch with today.

Life in Southampton was really memorable for me. The city is pretty big, with a population of around 250,000 people. Since it is on the coast, there are lots of beaches and pretty villages nearby, such as the Isle of Wight and Bournemouth, which are beautiful and popular beach destinations in the UK. Next door, there was also the New Forest, which is a huge national park where you can camp, go to the beach, go for hikes and other adventures.

Probably the best thing about living in Southampton as a student is that it was easy to get around the city by bike and walking. I personally bought a bike and used it to get around - there were many cycle lanes and shortcuts to take by bike through the beautiful green parks dotted around the city.

To summarise, Across the Pond walked alongside me, from beginning to end, in the decision that changed my life forever. Without their support, I don’t think I would have studied in the UK, which opened my eyes to a new culture, country and continent I was unaware of before. While at Southampton University, I met a British student who introduced me to life in the UK more so than anyone else I knew. She showed me what authentic food tasted like, taught me slang and introduced me to local people and places I would never have otherwise known. But the best part is that she and I fell in love and we are now married, living in Mexico. My life changed when I took that step with Across the Pond, and I will always be thankful for that.

Study Microelectronics System Design abroad in the UK

Master's in Microelectronic Systems Design

My student experience in the UK, guided by Across the Pond, has been a transformative chapter in my life. I chose to embark on this journey to expand my academic and professional horizons, immersing myself in an environment that leads in innovation and educational excellence in the field of microelectronics. Several factors led me to choose the UK for my master's, with the rich history of research and technological advancements, along with the opportunity to dive into a diverse culture, standing out.

The choice of the University of Southampton was a result of meticulous analysis. This institution stood out for its prestige in the area of microelectronic systems design and its focus on cutting-edge research. Furthermore, the university's facilities are simply incredible. From equipped laboratories to collaborative learning spaces, the university provided the perfect environment for me to academically thrive and conduct high-quality research.

My experience on campus was enriching in many ways. Not only did I have access to exceptional resources, but I also interacted with students and professors from various parts of the world. As for my accommodation, although I faced some challenges initially, I eventually managed to find a place near the school. This convenient location not only facilitated my engagement in academic activities but also allowed me to explore the beautiful city of Southampton.

Comparing university life in Mexico and the UK revealed notable differences. In the UK, independence and self-discipline in studies are emphasized. Teaching methods are more interactive, fostering critical thinking and active participation. The master's in microelectronic systems design was a natural choice for me as I have an innate passion for electronics and a constant desire to learn and delve deeper into this field.

However, it wasn't all smooth sailing. Language barriers emerged as an unexpected challenge. Most of my peers were from China, which made communication and bonding a bit difficult. Despite this hurdle, we managed to find alternative ways to interact and collaborate on projects, enriching my cross-cultural experience.

Looking back, there are certain aspects I wish I had known before coming to the UK. In this regard, I must highlight the excellent guidance provided by Across the Pond. Their advice largely prepared me for cultural differences, the education system, and life in general in the UK. This mitigated any unpleasant surprises and enabled me to adapt more swiftly.

Lastly, I'd like to rate Across the Pond's service as exceptional. They were always kind and willing to address my emails with any questions or concerns I had. Their free guidance was immensely helpful throughout the process, from university selection to acclimatizing to a new country. Their support was pivotal in making my student experience in the UK as successful and enriching as possible.

Study Energy and Sustainability (Energy, Environment and Buildings) abroad in the UK

Helped me turn this dream into reality

My journey began when I took the decision to migrate to Ireland to learn English, a fundamental step on my path to pursuing a Master's in Energy and Sustainability at the University of Southampton. Leaving behind my home in Mexico, I embarked on this adventure into the unknown with the determination to acquire the linguistic skills necessary to achieve my dream. Within five months of arriving in Ireland, I found a job as a civil engineer; an opportunity that not only provided me with a valuable international work experience but also the chance to apply my skills in a multicultural environment. After years of preparation and effort, I finally managed to take the leap towards my dream by commencing my Master's in Energy and Sustainability at the University of Southampton, one of the most respected academic institutions in this field in the United Kingdom and worldwide. This was made possible with the assistance of an advisor from Across the Pond, who was the angel that guided and helped me turn this dream into reality.

During the year-long duration of the master's program, I faced the challenge of working and studying simultaneously; my determination pushed me to excel in both my studies and my job. The most astonishing and magical aspect of my journey was the opportunity to interact with people from different parts of the world while studying in Southampton. This experience enriched my life in unimaginable ways, as I was immersed in a multicultural environment where ideas and perspectives constantly crossed. This diversity not only broadened my horizons but also allowed me to better comprehend the global challenges related to energy issues and climate change that humanity faces.

Finally, I graduated successfully from the University of Southampton. I hope to make my story not only an inspiration for those in my country who aspire to pursue their dreams but also a reminder that with determination and passion, any goal is achievable. My experience in Southampton not only provided me with a world-class education but also the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and develop a deeper understanding of global challenges. I am left only with the realization that there are no limits to what can be achieved when dreams are pursued with passion and determination.

Study Law at Law School in the UK

Southampton is calm and peaceful

Law School, England - JD degree

Southampton is calm and peaceful, and I was able to focus on my studies without distractions.

During my study, I spent much of my free time at the Southampton courts. I attended many court sections which I found benefited me when I returned to Canada. My advice for students returning to Canada from Southampton is to be proactive before you go back. Start the NCA process right away and try to gain internships at Canadian firms whenever you have the opportunity.

Since leaving Southampton, I embarked on the ITLP at the law school, University of Toronto in Canada. The two years study allowed me to get into the Canadian bar entry level and I was able to pass the Canadian bar quickly to reach my goal to be a Canadian lawyer within two years.

JD Law Degree in the UK

Memorable international life experiences

Law School, England - JD degree

I studied within Southampton Law School at the University of Southampton.

Since graduating with my Law Degree (JD Pathway) from the University of Southampton I have returned to Canada to work for the Crown with the Government of Alberta Ministry of Justice. The majority of my work is focused on the prosecution of Criminal Code of Canada offences, however I also have the opportunity to review and prepare constitutional Charter of Rights arguments often.

In addition to working for the Crown, I have been completing the qualifying examinations which are required in order to practice law in Canada under an international degree. Now completed these exams, I will begin a process similar to that of a pupillage called 'Articles' which will allow me to be called to the bar as a qualified barrister in Canada. I hope to complete my Articles in the next six months and continue my work in criminal prosecutions with the Government.

Studying at the University of Southampton provided me with many memorable international life experiences but also allowed me to completed my legal studies at an accelerated pace. Although I can vividly recall many moments of exhaustion and frustration over the 2 year period of my studies, I believe that the heavy workload and high academic standards prepared me for the hard work and determination which is required for a successful legal career.

I would definitely recommend the University of Southampton to other International students.

Study Law in the UK

A world class Law degree

Law School, England - LLB

Having moved to Canada at a young age, there was always an inclination to eventually move back to the United Kingdom—where the majority of family resides. After graduating with a degree in Political Science and Journalism from a leading Canadian institution, I began exploring options of where I wanted to study law.

I always knew I wanted to study law. In fact, my high school yearbook profile says, “ambition: lawyer.” So I guess I always wanted to be a lawyer!

Why did I want to study law in the UK?

Being a dual citizen, law school in England was an advantageous option. My love of politics, economics and current events, along with the fact I had lived in other countries led to an international mind-set and an eagerness to work and study in a cross-jurisdictional environment.

I knew that if I wanted to work in an international business/commercial law setting I needed an English law degree. This is where the University of Southampton and Norton Rose Fulbright comes in.

Why did I choose the University of Southampton?

Firstly, its reputation. The is university is a top 100 institution in the world and being part of the prestigious Russell Group makes it extremely attractive. The university also provides a two-year graduate accelerated programme which has a Canadian focus and is tailored specifically for Canadian students. It is also very accommodating to international students. Southampton offers the benefits of being by the coast but also the convenience of being so close to London and its international airports. The city also has a great open common and is close to the New Forest.

What does the law school offer?

Southampton does an excellent job working with local firms but also has great ties with top city and global legal practices like Norton Rose Fulbright. The university holds law fairs, employability weeks and skills workshops; all of which prepares you for a career in law.

What did I do outside of academics at Southampton?

Whilst at Southampton I played for the Law football team, namely ‘Law Galaxy’. In my second year I was captain and was responsible for organising matches, training and social events.

One of the best things about the University is that it offers an abundance of clubs and sports teams for all types of people so get involved.

My Route to the Training Contract with Norton Rose Fulbright

The University of Southampton provided me with a backbone of core legal skills. Working for a top city law firm is not for everyone. Some people prefer to work in a regional setting and establishing that early on will really help which firms you target and envision working at.

I knew that I wanted to work for a global legal practice with an international presence. I met Caroline Lindner, the Trainee Recruitment Manager at one of the Southampton law fairs in November. After attending an Open day I kept in contact with her throughout the process.

Norton Rose Fulbright was always my first option. With 5 offices in Canada and over 50 worldwide, the practice is truly international.

After graduating in June 2014, I went to the Middle East where I lived in Dubai for just over a month working as a legal intern for the airline Emirates. After that I worked as a legal intern for Spectris Plc in Egham, which is a FTSE 250 company. Both these internships followed up from the core skills I established at Southampton and put me in good standing for my training contract interviews.

In August I had my assessment day with Norton Rose Fulbright and was lucky enough to be offered a training contract with the practice that I wanted to join from day one. I am currently attending the Legal Practice Course at BPP University in London and will be joining the Norton Rose Fulbright in March.

My University Southampton Experience in a Nutshell?

Rewarding. In addition to the education I received, I was fortunate to have a great group of friends in my year, many of which remain friends today. If you are Canadian and looking for a world class law degree, look no further than Southampton. Everything you need is here.

LLB Accelerated graduate programme, Southampton Law School

Beautiful campus

Southampton Law School, England - LLB Accelerated graduate programme

I studied LLB Accelerated graduate programme within Southampton Law School at the University of Southampton.

I wanted to study Law abroad as firstly, I love to travel. Secondly, I have a huge interest in law. When I was given the opportunity to do both, I could not say no. It is rare when an opportunity like this comes along. I believe that knowledge is power and the more educated I am on different governments, culture and people; the more versatile I am to employers.

One of the big reasons I chose the University of Southampton was because of where it was situated. Generally in England, the stereotype is that is always raining and cold – but I had heard amazing things about Southampton such as how it is a peaceful, quiet area with moderate weather. Furthermore, the fact that it was part of the Russell Group made my choice that much easier. When researching prospective schools, my main goal was to attend a school that had a good reputation in England and so far it has lived up to my expectations. The professors and tutorial assistants are tough – but I appreciate that simply because law school should be challenging.

The campus is beautiful. White cherry blossoms during the spring, café’s, spacious library, efficient bus service and the people are very friendly. Furthermore, the professors teach with enthusiasm and tutorial assistants are always there to provide you one-on-one help if anything becomes too difficult. If you need any career advice, Jan Steele is to the go to person. She is constantly updating you with career opportunities, skills workshop, volunteer positions and meet and greets. This is especially helpful for first years, as you will be exposed to different law firms in England.

I enjoy the moderate weather. In Canada, winters are incredibly painful. This year was a good change. I also enjoy the fact that I have all of Europe at my fingertips. Everything is accessible either through the train, plane or bus. You are given so many opportunities to travel. When can you actually say, you have been to Paris or Spain for the weekend? Or you can go explore the UK. Southampton has great little shops, ethnic restaurants, pubs and the scenery is just too beautiful.

Since I am in the accelerated program, I have the privilege of being surrounded by other Canadian students – so it was very easy to make friends. We are all here for the same purpose which allows us bond for mutual reasons. British students are extremely friendly as well and their accents are an exciting change.

I have not joined any sports team, but I have joined the gym closer to the city centre to keep active. It is very affordable and spacious. There are a lot of societies you can join, Law Society, Lawyers without Borders to name a few. There are also, mooting competitions, negotiation competitions and etc.– which I have had the pleasure of participating in and I would suggest future students to participate as well. Mooting allows you hone argumentative skills in the correct legal way, which will be important for the Legal Reasoning course in your first year as well as for the future, once you become a lawyer.

When I graduate I am planning to return back to Canada. That was my plan from the beginning as I am very close with my family and friends. I was also a practicing Paralegal In Canada and have made many connections prior to coming to England, which will hopefully benefit me as a new lawyer. If I didn’t miss my family so much, I would stay in England without a doubt.

A great experience

Law School, Southampton

I studied within Southampton Law School at the University of Southampton.

I am currently an Associate at DLA Piper (Canada) LLP practicing Securities & Corporate Finance and Mergers & Acquisitions. The clients that we work for cover the spectrum from small private issuers to large cap public issuers, predominantly in the oil and gas sector.

Studying at the University of Southampton was a great experience, not only from an academic perspective but also with respect to extra-curriculars. While at the University of Southampton I made sure to make the most of my spare time. I was involved in several extra-curricular activities including acting as President of the University of Southampton Investment Society and Law Society, both of which were excellent opportunities, and I also took the time to travel around Europe on weekends when cheap flights were available! I believe these kinds of activities and experiences help to round individuals and certainly give you a leg up in the real world.

Southampton is a small town, but it was everything you could ask for

Study Law in Southampton

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE SOUTHAMPTON?

I chose Southampton for two main reasons. Firstly, because it was one of the recommended schools for the JD pathway by Across the Pond. Secondly, my friend who attended this university a couple of years before I started talked to me about the great approach taken by the professors here in helping students to succeed in what can be an extremely challenging degree.

WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR SOUTHAMPTON ‘HIGHLIGHTS’ WHILST STUDYING HERE?

After a long week of lectures and tutorials, I look forward to grabbing a beer and listening to the Karaoke with my fellow Canadian students at the Student Pub. Southampton also has a small airport, which is the perfect the location to fly all over Europe. I was able to take advantage of the holiday breaks to fly to and explore several cities in Europe.

WHAT OPPORTUNITIES HAVE YOU TAKEN UP (WITHIN YOUR DEGREE PROGRAMME AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR)? IN WHAT WAYS HAVE THEY HELPED YOUR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT?

In my first year, I had the exciting opportunity to present arguments as senior appellant in a moot, which was great fun as well as invaluable experience. This year I was able to attend a CETA talk in London. I had the opportunity to talk to the senior commissioner for Canada and a solicitor who participated in drafting the agreement. Having an EU module in my second year at Southampton meant that I was able to engage and ask relevant questions about the functioning of the new agreement at the talk. The CETA is very important for all Canadians and Canadian lawyers because it will be affecting many federal, provincial and municipal laws. It is therefore crucial to understand how the EU works in order to recognise the effect that CETA has on Canadian companies.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR COURSE?

I really enjoy Land law and Equity & Trusts. They are exciting to learn about because of the way that they have been developed over time. The Land and Trust laws are complex and messy, but amazingly they work.

WHAT NETWORKING, EMPLOYMENT AND WORK EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITIES HAVE YOU UNDERTAKEN AND HAVE THEY ENHANCED YOUR SOUTHAMPTON EXPERIENCE?

I am currently the Canadian ambassador for the University of Southampton. This role has allowed me to meet with and greet many Canadian students studying in Southampton. This has helped me to network with fellow students and lawyers. I am also part of the Canadian law society, and a member of the university law society. It is important to be part of these societies because they have organized so many events during which I was able to meet new and interesting people from all around the world. I was able to visit the Jones Day firm in London and experience how big corporate firms operate. It also opened my eyes to the many opportunities of working for international firms that have offices in many continents. I have also had the opportunity to attend several employability skills workshops at Southampton. The most exciting workshop was about the cross-examination of witnesses and learning the technique to effectively do so.

What is Southampton like as a place to study?

Southampton is a small town but it has everything that you could ask for. It has a great nightlife, a big mall that is great for shopping, a beautiful waterfront and the opportunity to fly anywhere in Europe.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A STUDENT STARTING THEIR DEGREE AT SOUTHAMPTON?

For the first couple of weeks it will be hard being away from home, but trust me, it gets better. As an ambassador and a fellow Canadian student you can always contact me for any guidance or enquiry.
