HISTORY OF NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY LONDON

Northeastern University London first opened its doors to students in 2012. Founded by A C Grayling and originally called New College of the Humanities, NU London only offered courses in humanities subjects. It was originally located in Bedford Square in Bloomsbury.

It was given Taught Degree Awarding Powers in 2019, allowing it to offer degrees and expand its portfolio outside of the humanities. Since its expansion, NU London has moved into Devon House in St Katharine Docks to offer students much more space and enhanced facilities.

Northeastern University London was awarded university status and subsequently changed its name in 2022.

Whilst it has always championed a liberal arts style in its teaching, NU London’s degree programmes have changed over the years to reflect the best offering for students. Originally the format was a major/minor system, however they have since developed this to offer single degrees as well as joint honours degrees that allow students to choose elective pathways in other subject areas and a large degree of flexibility.

NU London’s degrees have interdisciplinary at their core. With flexible elective choices, students can decide what subjects they want to cover in their degree, giving them the opportunity to gain skills and knowledge in a number of topics that complement their main subject area.

STUDENT SUPPORT AT NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY LONDON

The Student Support and Development team help students manage the ups and downs of life at university. The team specialises in supporting students through a wide range of practical issues, including :

  • Understanding student finance & student loans

  • Support for independent, care-experienced and estranged students
  • Navigating the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) and advice and support to offer holders wanting to apply for DSA
  • Provide help and advice to students experiencing a wellbeing issue
  • Help for students with short-term physical issues, e.g. broken arm
  • Mental health and wellbeing

Learning Support Plans (LSP) are available for any student with a disability or difference, for example a specific learning difficulty, medical condition, neurological differences or mental health difficulties.

The Student Support & Development team is trained and experienced and are on hand to offer support to students experiencing poor mental health, whether it is a diagnosed mental health condition or new feelings of being low, anxious or distressed. The Student Mental Health Advisors can help students to manage their mental wellbeing, help navigate NHS services and provide referrals to counselling or coaching.

Students at the University have access to Spectrum Life Student Assistance Programme (SAP). The SAP has a 24/7 helpline that gives in-the-moment support to students who are struggling and need assistance out of hours. Spectrum Life also hosts a platform and App to support mental and physical wellbeing and includes healthy recipes, fitness videos, podcasts, meditations, etc which students can use freely.

The University has joined the Student Minds Mental Health Charter Programme, demonstrating their commitment to developing a whole institution approach to mental health and wellbeing and creating cultural change oncampus.
 

NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY LONDON FACILITIES 

The innovative and modifiable space includes classrooms, tutorial rooms, seminar and event spaces, as well as communal social areas, and quiet study spaces with WIFI throughout the building. There are also coffee and tea areas, study pods, showers, multifaith rooms, and support rooms The ground floor hub space offers an integrated bar for student and university events, games tables (pool, table tennis, and foosball) and comfortable and sociable seating areas.

The entire campus is extremely welcoming to all, with excellent accessibility and support, including lifts, wide entry points, adaptable furniture, and hearing loops.The ventilation and air-filtration system is similar to those used in hospital settings providing enhanced protection for the community.

Since NU London is located in one of the most historical, multi-cultural and vibrant cities in the world, lecturers occasionally take their teaching out into the city, turning to the law courts, museums and art galleries as the backdrop for relevant classes. This provides students the opportunity to experience first-hand what they are learning about, deepen their understanding and perspective of a certain topic, and broaden their learning environment. 

SPORTS AND SOCIETIES AT NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY LONDON

The Student Union (SU) is a student-led organisation at the heart of the NU London experience. Student Union The SU exists to promote the interests of the student body, campaigning, lobbying, and advocating for student issues, as well as planning social and extracurricular activities and providing support to student clubs and societies.

Whatever the student’s passion – art, music, football, netball, theatre, performing arts, creative writing, politics, or playwriting to playing poker or sharing an appreciation of craft beer – they can get involved in bringing it to life through the SU.

ACCOMMODATION AT NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY LONDON

The University’s partner accommodation providers offer a range of housing options to reflect all budgets. All the recommended halls have excellent security features, comfortable bedrooms and communal areas, and are a short commute from the University.

Students find that living alongside fellow students from NU London when they start their degree is a great way to make friends and to get their bearings in London. Some of the recommended halls have NU London Resident Life Co-ordinators living onsite.

RLCs support students with their accommodation and arrange a wide range of social activities and entertainment. Their recommended halls offer a great opportunity to meet and mix with students studying a huge variety of subjects at other London universities, giving you the halls accommodation experience of a large university. Some students also choose to live at home or to rent privately and share a flat with friends.
