HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HULL
Hull has its origins as a port city, on the banks of the River Humber it has been a key trade city leading to Europe and beyond for hundreds of years. This has led to Hull’s expertise in sustainability, becoming one of the biggest manufacturers and exporters of wind turbines in the UK, as well as important work in Logistics, Marine Biology, and the environment. The University of Hull was established in 1927, and over the years has grown to include the double accredited Business School, Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Data Modelling, Hull York Medical School, and more. SPECIALIST AREAS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HULL
Hull University Business School’s AACSB and AMBA accreditations place it in the top 2% of the world business schools. From Logistics to Marketing, Accounting to Entrepreneurship, the University has a range of programmes to suit anyone’s business aspirations.
The Centre of Excellence for Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Modelling is breaking traditional boundaries to bring new technologies in data science and AI. The Wilberforce Institute aims to advance knowledge of slavery and emancipation, informing policy, business practice and public debate at local, national and international levels. The mission is to produce high quality and innovative research on slavery in all its forms, historical and contemporary. These are not seen as separate fields of inquiry; on the contrary, history is regarded as a lens through which to study contemporary issues regarding slavery and exploitation.
As a community of researchers, The Wilberforce Institute is committed to disciplinary excellence and to interdisciplinary research that will benefit society on a national and international level. Collaborating with academic partners, NGOs, museums and businesses, it acts as a forum for academic discourse and interaction on slavery past and present. With an aim to maximise the benefits of research by advancing fundamental knowledge of slavery and emancipation, contributing to better public policy, social cohesion, community identity, education, the arts and the heritage sector.
LIFE ON CAMPUS
The University of Hull is a one-campus university, meaning everything you need is in one place. For study there is a 7 story-library, modern lecture theatres and labs, for socialising, a gym, sports fields, bar and nightclub, and for essentials a mini-supermarket. With lots of cafés, green spaces, and social areas you can always find somewhere to study. The University has 3 accommodation blocks on campus so you are never far from everything you need. The University is close to the city’s student district filled with bars, cafés and international supermarkets.
STUDENT SUPPORT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HULL
Hull is known as a friendly city and that is clear in the support services offered at the University. Students can expect a wide range of support including:

During their studies, students will have a Personal Supervisor who can support them academically throughout the years of study, and for each class, a Module Leader will be available to help with any questions they might have about assignments or reading.
Based in the Brynmor Jones library, the Study Skills Team are there to help students with topics ranging from referencing to academic integrity. They are a key team who can support international students with the change in learning and assignment style. They hold one-to-one sessions, group sessions, and have online resources to help with everything academic.
The careers service, the Student Futures Team work with students on everything employability. In students first week at Hull they will be invited to a part-time job fair to meet local employers. The team run two job boards where students can look for jobs online, including one specifically for international students. The team offer advice for business start-ups, practice interviews and CV checking, connect students with e-mentors in their field, and the Hull Employability Awards, a programme that showcases the work students have done during their studies to become more employable.
The Student Union not only runs all of the societies and sports clubs, but also an Advice Centre. Where students can get advice on any issues they are having with housing, or on their financial situation.
UNIVERSITY OF HULL FACILITIES
The Faculty of Business, Law and Politics is based in one of the traditional red-brick collegiate building, but has all of the modern facilities you would expect from a forward-thinking university. In Hull University Business School, the Bloomberg Suite shows live global markets, and Executive Suite is where business events are hosted. The Business School is also host to the University’s largest lecture theatre that holds 500 students. Within the School of Law and Politics there are mock Law courts and spaces for mock crime scenes.
In the School of Arts there has been investments of £9.5 million to create a world-class concert hall, cinema and theatre space. That’s in addition to the existing state-of-the-art music, film and digital media facilities on campus. In the New Media Centre students will find industry-standard facilities and equipment that support students across film, media, game and graphic design. Students have access to the Adobe software collection for creation of 2D graphic designs and multimedia pieces, and have the opportunity to learn professional skills in 3D and apply these using software such as Autodesk Maya, a professional package used in the creation of films and games. As well as a flagship Duality Recording Studio in Middleton Hall, students benefit from a number of other excellent studio facilities on campus. Students also have access to the Ambisonic Studio, a 3D surround-sound studio with 4-8-4 array, additional Barefoot stereo monitoring and fully adjustable lift and desk for ideal monitoring position. The composition studio - a creative space to develop composition ideas, experiment with synthesis and interactive devices, score for film and TV, alongside other projects.
The Anthony Minghella Studio is an experimental-teaching and theatre-production space. Complete with a sound and light control room, most of the school's internal productions take place in the Studio, organised by the student and staff run Events Committee. On practical projects, the Production Manager, Designer and Construction Manager work together to orchestrate all of the administrative elements that lead to the design and construction of a theatre set.
In the Faculty of Science and Engineering there are a range of facilities including the Robotics Lab, Mechanical Engineering Workshop, and FabLab. There has also been investment in the Centre of Excellence for Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Modelling. This brand new, £4.5 million facility houses the largest computational teaching space on campus. Spread over two levels, it has hundreds of seats for students to learn, practice, and apply their coding technique to unique problems that face the world related to data science, artificial intelligence and modelling.
SPORTS AND SOCIETIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HULL
The Students’ Union is for everyone studying at the University of Hull. It’s here to help make time at University count, by supporting students to connect, develop, meet new people and build a support network. The University of Hull has over 50 sports including soccer, American football, baseball, climbing, swimming, dance, and many more! The University’s sports teams welcome students of any ability, whether you are a professional or want to try something new. There are over 80 societies from film clubs to religious clubs, study clubs to music clubs. These societies are the best way to meet people with similar interests. The Students’ Union also run the Give It A Go (GIAG) programme, where students have the opportunity to try new things or go on day trips to new places. The team also organise opportunities to socialise at the on campus bar and nightclub at events like Welcome Week or weekly karaoke and quiz nights.
ACCOMMODATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HULL
The University of Hull has over 2300 on-campus rooms across three accommodation blocks. There are a range of options for students depending on their preferences and budget, but all students will have their own bedroom. For the most affordable options students would have their own bedroom, a shared bathroom, and a shared living and kitchen space. The cost of rooms includes bills such as gas, electricity, wifi, cleaning once per week, and for the two most popular accommodations, 24 hour reception and security. University accommodation is based on campus so you can get to the library, the gym, and your lectures all within 10 minutes.
Students also have the option to rent privately, the streets surrounding the campus have student accommodation so you can still be really close to campus. These options can be even more affordable than on-campus options.
INTERNATIONAL FOCUS
The University of Hull’s international students make up around 20% of the student population. Smith & Nephew is a leading medical technology company, operating in around 100 countries globally. Its Advanced Wound Management portfolio provides a comprehensive set of products to meet complex clinical needs, helping healthcare professionals get closer to zero human and economic consequences of wounds, and its Hull site manufactures some of the world’s most advanced wound care products. Smith & Nephew actively recruits graduates from the University of Hull, as well as offering student placements. Over the last five years, Smith & Nephew has nearly trebled the size of the R&D and clinical teams at the site and the largest single source of graduate recruitment to Smith & Nephew in Hull is through the University.
The Faculty of Business, Law and Politics is proud to work with a wide variety of corporate partners at local, regional and national levels including ARCO, P&O Ferries, local sports teams, and health service. Professional work is built into Business programmes at the University of Hull, so students have the opportunities to work on real projects with real businesses as part of their programme.
STUDY ABROAD OPPORTUNITIES AND INTERNSHIPS

STUDY IN HULL
Hull is in the region of Yorkshire, in the north of England. It is a smaller city of around 300,000 people, and a city that is known for its community spirit and celebration of culture. Hull is only around a 20 minute drive from seaside towns of the east coast and being in the middle of the UK it is easy to explore other cities around the country.
Hull was awarded City of Culture from 2017 – 2021, a recognition of the spirit of Hull and the events throughout the year that celebrate music, the arts, and the diversity of the city.
By train you can reach Leeds in 1 hour, Manchester in 2 hours, and London in 2.5 hours, so exploring other cities is easy from Hull. The city is also very well connected to the Netherlands, with a local airport and ferry port to reach Rotterdam and Amsterdam it is an easy way to access the rest of Europe.

Football (or soccer if you are American) fans can support The Tigers and watch Hull City play in the Championship at the clubs 25,000 seat stadium, or easily travel to cities like Manchester to watch some of the biggest clubs in the world. Hull is home to two of the top Rugby teams in the country, Hull FC and Hull KR, pick a side and support them throughout the year.
