Why Do a 1-Year Master’s in the United Kingdom?

Are you thinking of going to graduate school, but daunted by the time and money it will cost you? Do you want the study abroad experience, but aren’t sure you want to be away from home for long? If you’re looking to enter the job market faster, while still getting a world class education, studying a one-year Master’s programme in the UK could be the path for you!

There are many benefits to completing a Master’s degree in the UK; for the most part, postgraduate Master’s programmes in the UK are one year, which saves you time, money on tuition and living expenses, while still giving you the experience of studying abroad.

See below for all the reasons our advisors at Across the Pond recommend a one-year Master’s programme in the United Kingdom!

Lower Cost

While the initial tuition price may seem quite high, when you factor in that you are only paying for one year of study and one year of living expenses, versus the two a Master’s degree your home country may require, the cost of studying a one-year Master’s in the UK often works out to be cheaper than studying at home! As well, you can enter the job market and start earning earlier – you’re guaranteed to make more than that second year in tuition with one year of work, ultimately saving money in the end!

Shorter Programme

Studying for a degree can be quite intensive – perhaps you’re ready to finish your studies, but still need that postgraduate qualification in order to work in your field. A one-year Master’s saves you time on your studies and allows you to gain valuable life experience through studying abroad and travelling at the same time!

As well, if research isn’t something you are interested in, the shorter dissertation is a huge benefit – you spend three months on research and writing, rather than the full year that many two-year Master’s programmes require.

For career paths that require a PhD in most countries, such a Clinical Psychology, a one-year Master’s programme gives you the qualification you need for doctoral studies, while shortening the overall length of time you need to be at university. With career paths that require 6-8 years of study, that one year makes a huge difference, and allows you to start practicing (and earning!) earlier.

As well, one year abroad is much less of a commitment than longer degrees – it gives you the chance to gain that international experience, while returning to your family and friends sooner!

Explore Your Interests

Perhaps you know what subject area you want to work in, but aren’t sure of an exact career – pursuing a one-year Master’s in the UK is low-risk, high-reward, as it gives you a qualification many employers will look for, without limiting you to one career. General programmes in subjects like English, History, Language, or Biomedical Science, allow you to gain further knowledge in the field, without committing to one career path – rather, they give you the skills for many, and open doors to new opportunities!

Career Opportunities

Speaking of opportunities, many one-year Master’s degrees also have the option of integrated work placements, or the opportunity to add a placement year, depending on the field. You can gain work experience in your field while still learning, make employment connections for after graduation, all while travelling and studying something you’re passionate about!

Career Specialisation

If you undertook a more general undergraduate degree, you may need to now specialise at the postgraduate level to get a job in your career field. The UK allows you to specialise in one year of study, allowing you to enter the job market much sooner, while networking both within your programme with other international students, and through the careers office you will have access to as a student at the university you choose!

Unique Subjects

Perhaps you have a niche subject interest, or the programme you want to pursue is not offered in your country – the UK has a wide variety of Master’s programmes, so sign up for an advisor to find out what options you have in your area of interest!
