Study at University of Hull in England, UK

My time at Hull played a crucial role

Studying Logistics and Supply Chain Management at the University of Hull gave me the foundation to take my career to the next level. The analytical mindset, problem-solving skills, and global perspective I gained there have been invaluable as I currently pursue my master’s degree in the MIT Global SCALE Network.

At MIT SCALE, I am expanding my knowledge in data-driven decision-making, advanced analytics, and strategic supply chain management. Looking back, my time at Hull played a crucial role in shaping my approach to complex challenges, preparing me to navigate the evolving demands of the industry with confidence.

Study AI in the UK

High level of enthusiasm and passion from the professors

Before starting this course (MSc Artificial intelligence and Data science), I was working in the IT department in industry. AI was one of the largest themes everyone discussed to improve the performance of all divisions. I began to think to install systems which used machine learning and studied short online courses. However, it was difficult to succeed without strong knowledge. In addition, I realized that a lot of small and medium-sized companies could not apply the benefits of AI. So, I thought I wanted to study AI to support the application of AI in the real world.

Were there any role models (either people you know, or perhaps you’ve never met) that inspired you to get into tech and AI/data science? Please explain how they inspired you.

I did not have any role models before I got into tech and AI/data science. After enrolling on this course, I did find a role model. My role model is Dr Nina Dethlefs. It was a good stimulus and a large impact for me that she successfully led the lectures of AI as director of computer science. I am from Japan. Despite being a developed country, Japan is a male-oriented with a gender gap ranking of 116 out of 146 countries. So, I never expected there would be a female professor on the AI and Data science course.

Tell us about your course. What have you been expected to do and are there any particular parts of the course have you enjoyed the most? Why?

Workshops in the computer lab were exciting for me. It was the opportunity to try and apply what I learnt through the online lectures with hands on experience. I was able to study not only theories but also practicalities through the workshops. The tasks we were challenged to solve through the workshops were like problems in real life. So, it made me imagine myself becoming a researcher. The workshops were not formal and more friendly and free, so we could talk and share out thoughts and ideas easily with one another. From this, I could make some new friends there too!

Please explain what and why you were attracted to the courses.

I was attracted to this course because I found out that the conversion course starts with programming, despite the short duration of one year. Other university courses are conversion courses, but I felt that it was assumed that I already had enough basic knowledge of some kind of AI or data science, or that I could program. But this course doesn't do that and starts with programming. It made me feel that the professors were serious about teaching from the basics through this course. I chose this course because I knew that I would not waste a year of my time and tuition fees if I studied in a course with such a high level of enthusiasm and passion from the professors.

What are your plans and dreams for the future and do you think the course will help you to achieve them? How?

My plan in the future is to become a researcher who discovers new usage and proposes an evaluation system of AI in mobile health applications. This course provided me the foundations of the path to be the researcher with a variety of ways. For example, through the case study, I learnt how to collaborate with other researchers. In lectures with external speakers, I could know what a variety of researchers were doing exactly. In the third trimester, I conducted my research project following a proposal created in the second trimester. I believe that this course was a practical practice to become a researcher.

What advice would you give someone like yourself, who might be thinking about studying on the postgraduate conversion course programme?

Learning from the basics to master's level in a short period of one year is not easy, even if it is a field of interest. However, after completing the course, you will realise that you are much closer to what you wanted to do and the ideal image you wanted to become. Throughout the year, you will feel a sense of achievement, not only in your academic skills, but also a sense of pride in yourself for your hard work. The conversion course is a great foundation for your next success in life. Why not give it a go?

Study English at Hull University in England

Adjustable. Exciting. Endless opportunities.

Hull offers top quality teaching for my desired course with various opportunities. Within the university there's also an abundant of choices for societies, sport teams and volunteering. It is also really affordable - both tuition fees and living costs - compared to other institutions I've looked at in other cities. It's also not too far to lots of major cities and towns when it comes to travelling. I'd say all of these factors are a win!

Why did you choose to study your chosen subject, and why at Hull?

My studies in Hull started with a Bachelors in Creative Writing and Film Studies and proceeded to a Masters in English focusing on Creative Writing. When finalising my decision on which institution to study at, I compared the outline of the course and realised Hull focuses on engagement between tutors and students. I believe this interaction is really important and a prime way of learning. The support I've received from my tutors are beyond excellent and I could not imagine building the relationships I have somewhere else.

Which accommodation do you live in? What are the best things about where you live?

I live at Ashcourt, a private off-campus accommodation. The location of Ashcourt is very convenient because it's in the middle of everywhere I need to go to regularly. The university is a 10 minutes walk straight down the same road. Lidl is also down the road on the other end about 7 minutes away. And right opposite is Newland Avenue - lots of shops and cafes to visit and hangout with friends. Ashcourt also offers security, parking, maintenance and all utility bills and Wi-Fi are included in the rent.

How have you changed as a person since coming to study in Hull?

I've become more independent and learned how to be more initiative. Through numerous networking opportunities I got to do through the university, it has helped me to develop skills that will be important to have in both life and the working field. Studying in Hull has really prepared me for what's to come next and I'm ready to see where these skills can take me.

What do you do in your spare time when you’re not studying? Are you part of any societies and would you recommend joining them?

Many people know how much I love to keep myself busy outside of my academics. In the Creative Writing department, we have a student organisation called HU Writes and I help to run the Magazine Team. HU Writes is a creative outlet for us to display our work. Apart from the Magazine, we also have a Showcase, Podcast and a Website. Dancing for nearly 20 years now, I've joined the Hull University Dance Squad (HUDS) and they're open to all levels (from Open to Advanced). They are the nicest and most supportive group of people I've met and I would highly recommend giving HUDS a try, regardless you have a background in dance or not.

I also work part-time on campus at SPAR, a convenience store at the HUSU building. The flexibility of the shifts caters well with my busy schedule. They're also understandable that academics is students' priority. Finally, I always love going to the theatre when the opportunity rises. Hull has three fantastic theatres and tickets are at affordable prices compared to bigger cities. With theatre being the heart of England I would definitely recommend giving it a try, especially if you've never experience it before!

How do you feel about the city of Hull?

As I've said to many people, Hull is a nice balance between a city and countryside, making it a suitable place for students to study at. There's always something lively happening in the city of Hull, but it's also calm enough for a nice or chill wind down and never overwhelming. The balance of social life and lack of distraction could not be more perfect.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of studying at Hull/studying your subject at Hull?

Always plan ahead and be three steps ahead. Stick to it while you can but if you don't, make sure you have a backup plan. Get a planner or record your schedule on your digital calendar. Planning is a huge help when it comes to time management, a factor that many students forget how important it is.

Can you summarise your experience of Hull in a few words?

Adjustable. Exciting. Endless opportunities :)
