Study at London Metropolitan University

Studying Abroad Has Felt Like an Extended Vacation

Moving abroad was never part of my original plan. However, what started as a back-up plan soon became my reality. When I first considered studying abroad, I felt anxious—mostly because I was stressed about navigating a new country I had never visited, and about being away from my family and friends.

I moved from Canada to the UK, and in the beginning, it was quite difficult being apart from loved ones and trying to organise everything before my studies began. But those challenges quickly subsided, and I started to truly experience all that London has to offer. I found myself slowly falling in love with the city and becoming more open to new experiences I never imagined myself having.

When I travel, I usually feel like I’ve seen most of what a destination has to offer within a few days. However, after a year in London, I still feel as though I’ve only scratched the surface. Of course, being a student comes with typical stressors like assignments and exams. But living in such an incredible city has made studying significantly more enjoyable—even simple things like studying in cafés or commuting through the city to get to university have been a joy. That’s why I often say that studying in London has felt like an extended vacation.

While studying is my main priority, as it’s the reason I’m here, it would be a missed opportunity not to fully immerse myself in everything this city has to offer. With some organisation, it’s absolutely possible to enjoy the city—even during the semester. London has truly become a second home for me, and I know I’ll continue to create many great memories here.

That said, the memories I’ve made aren’t limited to the UK. Being based in Europe has made travel both easy and affordable. I’ve had the chance to visit several countries during my time here. The idea of flying to a whole new country for just £30 was completely foreign to me before moving here. It would be a wasted experience not to take advantage of being so close to so many incredible destinations—especially considering how expensive it would be to travel from Canada.

If you’re on the fence about studying abroad, I wholeheartedly encourage it. It has changed my life in ways I never expected, and I’ll always cherish these years. Across the Pond made this opportunity possible by offering invaluable support throughout the application process. They made everything clear and straightforward, and there wasn’t a single question they couldn’t answer.

I hope this encourages you to take a leap of faith and consider studying abroad!

Study in Chester, UK

From Norway to England – My Big Adventure

Studying abroad has always been a dream of mine. I wanted to experience a new culture, become more independent, and at the same time receive a high-quality education. Choosing the UK felt natural – it offers an international environment, exciting student life, and amazing opportunities to build a global network of friends and connections.

I’ve always been adventurous and passionate about traveling. For me, studying abroad wasn’t just about education – it was about stepping out of my comfort zone, meeting new people, and gaining fresh perspectives. When my high school exchange year was canceled, my desire to study abroad only grew stronger. I’m also very close to my family, so it was important to me to choose a location where I could easily visit home. Studying in an English-speaking country felt like the best choice to make the transition smoother – and the UK was perfect for that.

🎓 Why I Chose the University of Chester

At first, I dreamed of studying in London, but life had other plans. Due to missing some required high school subjects, I didn’t get into my London option and had to choose from my four other alternatives. Chester stood out as the most practical choice – both financially and geographically – and looking back, I couldn’t be more grateful.

The University of Chester offers a strong academic environment combined with a welcoming student community. The campus is compact and easy to navigate, with everything from lecture halls to gyms and libraries within short walking distance. The university also provides a wide variety of sports and activities – whether you’re looking to compete, play casually for fun, or try a new sport for the first time. Joining these clubs has been one of the best decisions I’ve made for my social life and has truly made me feel at home.

For anyone considering studying in the UK, my advice is to do thorough research beforehand – especially regarding tuition fees and accommodation costs. Choosing Chester has saved me a lot of financial stress and given me the freedom to experience even more of what student life has to offer.

🌆 Chester – The Perfect Balance of City and Nature

Chester is a small yet incredibly charming city. The historic city center is full of cozy cafés, shops, and narrow streets where you can spend hours with friends or working on assignments. At the same time, Chester is perfectly located – with just a few hours by train, you can easily visit larger cities like Liverpool, Manchester, London, or even Wales for day or weekend trips.

Although Chester is a calmer city, there’s no shortage of social events and activities. Everything you need – campus, grocery stores, public transport – is within walking distance. Initially, I thought I would miss the big city lifestyle, but I’ve realized that I find peace being closer to nature, and Chester offers plenty of that. For me, it’s the perfect balance between vibrant city life and quiet escapes into the outdoors.

🏠 Student Accommodation – My Second Home

During my first year, I lived in student accommodation where I had my own room and bathroom but shared the kitchen and living area with other students. Living with others taught me a lot and gave me an instant social circle. We cooked together, helped each other with coursework, and celebrated both small and big moments as a little family.

It was actually by chance that I ended up in that particular accommodation, as I applied late – but it turned out to be one of the best things that could have happened. I wouldn’t have learned as much about campus and life in England if I had lived completely on my own.

💡 Budget tip: If you already know which university you want to attend, apply for accommodation early. This usually gives you better prices and the option to cancel if needed. Now, I live in a student flat and I’m very happy there too. Both living experiences have had their ups and downs, but both were within just a few minutes’ walk from campus, which makes everyday life so much easier.

💡 My Advice to Future Students

Don’t be afraid to take the leap! Be open, put yourself out there, and you’ll have an incredible and memorable experience full of learning and growth. Moving to a new country can feel intimidating at first, but the support you receive from the university and other students makes the transition so much easier than you’d think.

Across the Pond guided me throughout the entire application process. They provided great support and answered every question I had, which removed a lot of stress from the process. I highly recommend using their services – it made everything much smoother for me.

Study sports abroad?

Has prepared me so much more for working

I took an online degree from Oslo at the Global Institute of Sport which is based all around the world. This organisation is unconventional but that has prepared me so much more for working than a normal master’s degree could.

Close connection to the staff

The Global Institute of Sport offers great support from all the staff but particularly the module leaders. For each assignment, lecture or question the module leaders are always easy to contact and will happily help you achieve and learn the most out of the content and each task. The rest of the staff are also easy to reach where I feel like I managed to speak to everyone from student reps to the CEO and get a true connection to the organisation and where they got a reference to who I am as an individual as well. This constant support helped me achieve more in terms of results but also my understanding of the content was greater than I experienced during my undergraduate degree.

Global sport focus

The organisation has sport and the global market at heart for its operations. I have had the chance to experience sport from different viewpoints and cultures through the content of my modules but also through travelling the world to global partners of GIS.

Online and on-site events

GIS hosts numerous events both in-person and online to connect us students closer to the people in the industry. I have attended two global summits where I have had the chance to watch world-class sports as well as connect with industry professionals at the top of the sport industry. I was able to do this while seeing completely new places and experience completely new cultures. These events are also some of the opportunities to connect with fellow students and network with people in the sports industry.

Advantages of online study

The online study method meant that I was able to continue working alongside my studies which helped for my personal, professional and financial growth. The organisation gives great transparency in deadlines which also makes it easy to work at a fluid pace. The organisation also allows for studying at the campuses in which they partner with or host, so it is possible to move and study in the library with the online courses. There are also some in-person degrees at GIS but the one I took was fully online.

Transitioning into a job

Through the module content, networking events and the great support from the staff it has prepared me greatly for what to do after I finish my degree. They outline the opportunities that are available as well as a great career advisor who gives help to turn an application into a job offer.

While the institution is far from what is common in Norway it is exactly this that has given me more opportunity to grow hard and especially soft skills.

Study Psychology in London?

Intellectually stimulating and deeply reflective

Hello! My name is Rida, and I’m an international student from Pakistan currently completing my BSc in Psychology at Royal Holloway, University of London. My time here has been a transformative journey, both academically and personally.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my student life was becoming a Student Ambassador. This role gave me the opportunity to represent Royal Holloway to prospective students from around the world. Whether it was speaking at Open Days or guiding visitors around campus, I found genuine joy in sharing my experience and being part of a welcoming, supportive community.

Studying psychology has been intellectually stimulating and deeply reflective. The course structure allowed me to explore everything from cognitive neuroscience to developmental psychology. I particularly appreciated how practical examples were integrated into learning like using sensory associations (such as a specific perfume while studying and revising with it later for better recall) to understand memory processes. It’s amazing how applicable psychology becomes to daily life.

Although my initial plan was to continue straight into a master’s degree and secure a psychology-related job, my time at university helped me reassess and explore wider interests, such as Human Resources and Learning & Development. It showed me the value of staying open-minded and adapting your path as you grow.

Outside of academics, being an international student taught me crucial life skills. I learned to manage my finances, live independently, and build friendships that will last a lifetime. Living in the UK has also expanded my worldview, I’ve become more self-reliant, tolerant, and confident in social and professional spaces.

To anyone considering Royal Holloway or studying in the UK: it’s not always easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding. There are challenges, but there are also countless opportunities—on campus, in your course, and within yourself. My advice is to be proactive, stay open to new experiences, and don’t be afraid to carve your own path.

Study at the University of Derby

Studying in the UK has been a rewarding challenge

I’m currently pursuing my Master’s in Occupational Therapy at the University of Derby, and it’s been quite the journey so far. Derby is located in the East Midlands, which means it’s incredibly well-connected by train to many major cities, a huge plus for exploring the UK and getting to nearby airports for international travel. However, it’s also a relatively small city. While that makes it easy to navigate and settle in quickly, it can feel a bit quiet if you’re used to a more active student lifestyle. Looking back, I wish I had considered city size more carefully when choosing where to study, especially after coming from a larger program.

One thing that stood out to me when applying was that Derby was the first OT program certified by the NHS, which gave me a lot of confidence in the program’s quality. It’s also been backed by strong student experiences, and I’ve found the faculty to be supportive and approachable. I highly recommend reaching out to program leads before applying, they can give you practical details that may not be obvious on the course homepage, like term start and end dates, which is really helpful if you’re planning to travel home during breaks.

There are also multiple campuses at the University of Derby, so if you’re applying for accommodation, make sure to check where your classes will be held. That small step can save you a lot of commuting time!

Socially, being a postgraduate student means the age range among students is wider than I expected, which made making friends a little more challenging at first. But getting involved in societies made a big difference. I joined the hiking society, where I met some amazing people and had great experiences, I’ll even be serving as secretary next year. I’ve also joined the book club and plan to try the tennis society. The societies here are definitely one of the highlights of student life.

Overall, studying in the UK has been a rewarding challenge. I’ve grown so much both academically and personally. While there were unexpected moments along the way, I’ve found my rhythm. If you're considering studying abroad, I recommend researching not just the course but also the city size, student life, and support services, these factors really do matter.

And lastly, remember that it's okay to struggle sometimes. Even students who live close to home have a tough time adjusting, you’re making a huge leap by moving across the pond, and that takes courage. But it really is worth it in the end.

Study at the Global Institute of Sport

This year has been transformative

As I reflect on my past year as a full-time MSc Sports Marketing and Media student at the Global Institute of Sport, I am filled with immense gratitude for the enriching experiences, personal growth, and professional development that this journey has afforded me.

I started at GIS in September after deciding to leave my career in teaching behind. My previous career was one I did not see a long-term future in and so I took time out and travelled the world to give me time and space to consider my options going forward. It was during this time I discovered GIS and the opportunities and services it offers. As soon as I started reading what the institute is about, I knew this was going to be the next chapter in my career.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my year was serving as the Course Representative. This role gave me the chance to engage closely with my peers, listen to their feedback, and liaise with faculty to enhance the student experience. It allowed me to develop leadership and communication skills while contributing to the positive learning environment that GIS is known for.

A standout highlight was my internship with GIS in Jamaica, working alongside the marketing department at Mount Pleasant Football Academy. This week-long placement offered real-world exposure and a hands-on approach to sports marketing in an international context. It was both eye-opening and inspiring, reinforcing my passion for the industry and broadening my global perspective.

Throughout the year, I was consistently impressed by the array of webinars with leading industry experts. These sessions not only deepened my understanding of current trends and challenges in sports marketing but also provided invaluable networking opportunities. From Premier League football CEO’s to major sports broadcasters, there were sessions for students with all different interests. In addition, the commitment of GIS staff to supporting us with coursework, career advice, and professional pathways has been truly commendable. Their dedication made a significant impact on my academic performance and career preparation.

As a student completing their degree remotely, the online learning environment was seamless and well-organised, allowing me to balance rigorous academic work with opportunities to connect and collaborate with students from around the world. Whether through group projects or casual discussions, the sense of community was always present.

Lastly, although I was unable to attend one myself this year, the chance to attend Global Summits is a unique experience that I would encourage any student to embark on. I hope to attend one next year as an alumni student, as it didn’t work out for me personally this year, but all who attend describe it as a once in a lifetime experience. These events offer unparalleled insights into the global sports industry and a chance to engage with thought leaders and peers on an international scale.

Overall, this year has been transformative. I leave the programme not only with academic knowledge but with practical experience, professional networks, and a renewed confidence in my future career in sports marketing and media.

Study Biomedical Sciences in the UK

Changed the way I see the world

Coming to study in the United Kingdom has been one of the best experiences that have happened to me in my life and has changed the way I see the world.

At first, I was a little nervous and wondering what could happen, because a challenge like this is not easy, you leave your family, friends and partner to make a dream come true, a dream that many would like to realize but not all. They are given the opportunity. You arrive in a new country with a new culture, with another language, which is not the one you are used to and at first you don't know what to expect but you are sure that this will change your life.

I finished studying my master's degree at the University of York, one of the most beautiful universities in the entire UK. The university is one of the best in terms of technology.

York is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever seen, very quiet and its people made me feel at home, everyone helps you if you need something or want to know something; It is a city that has a lot of history and I love that, from the Vikings and different places to visit, although it is a small city, you can get to know too many things.

Here I met friends who became very important to me, who had the same fear and concerns as me, who wanted to take on the world by getting to know other cultures or simply living with more people. I met many Latinos who made me feel unique and that Latino community that was created was very special because we were always there for what we needed; we did not leave anyone without help. People from other cultures who are not Latino were very kind and we had incredible moments together, moments that there is no exact definition; different parties we went to, different moments of laughing, crying, being angry because our plans didn't turn out as we thought but it was worth it, that's part of living, it's part of learning in life, always moving forward despite the adversities.

We all agree with the same thing; That is, that present fear that cannot be removed, that fear that is unique but as they say, “it is better to try than just think: What would have happened?”, those phrases define a lot, being outside your social circle increases your shape too much. to see the world and further forges your identity, it helps you understand who you are and what opportunities you have to take to be a better person.

When you finish your studies, you really are another person, you are a unique person, a very different person from the one who arrived, a person who not only made friends, but also made brothers for life. Moments that no one will change and many moments that will live in your head. If I could go back in time, I would tell myself “Try it without fear, you will see how much you can do it and how much you have learned, you are strong for this challenge that is coming, it will change your life but for the better and you will meet people you want to keep their friendship.”

The personal advice I can give you is to try, not to stay on the path, which I know is scary, uncertain about what will happen but I know that you will be better people; You will meet excellent people, people who will be unforgettable and even though they are far away, they are with you through a message, I know that it can be done and that is how it should be.

Study Mental Health in the UK

Takes you to a world full of possibilities

Studying in England has been one of the best experiences of my life, not only because of the knowledge I gained from studying at such an important university but because of all the people I met, the experiences I lived and the personal and academic growth that this adventure left me with. When I arrived I didn't know what to expect from my new life, but I was surprised by how different it is from Mexico, from the way of teaching and evaluation, to the food, architecture, climate, and customs!

My reasons

I chose Birmingham because of the prestige of the University (it is ranked 80th worldwide in the QS World University Rankings), because of the course they offer and because the language, culture and accent seem incredible to me. Besides, having a master's degree in my second language is a way to show myself what I am capable of while expanding my possibilities when entering the job market.

Student life

The campus is beautiful, it looks like a museum. It is huge and has the best technology and infrastructure. I was amazed by everything the university has, from one of the largest libraries to bars and cafes on campus! The library is open 24 hours during assessment period and there are even blankets in case you get cold! Aside from academic activities, there are events all the time, for example, a carousel at Christmas or ice cream vans with free ice cream in the summer.

The way of teaching and grading is different from that in Mexico because the guidelines are different. For example, grades go from 0 to 100 but 70 and above is outstanding, something that personally surprised me. I liked that there are students from so many cultures that each class is made up of different points of view and cultural backgrounds.

There are student societies, which are clubs where you can do activities from academic to religious and social. For example, there is the pasta society, Latinos, Christians, darts, volunteering, comics, pole dancing, karate, rugby, Harry Potter, insulin appreciation, etc. There are more than 300 to choose from!

Social life

Birmingham being one of the largest cities in England has thousands of things to do. Living in this city not only helped me experience English culture but opened the door to different cultures. I made friends from India, China, Korea, Japan, Ecuador, and Turkey and even from countries I had never heard of like Tonga. So I could say that studying in England opened the doors to the world for me.

Work life

When I arrived I found a job where I was also able to meet many people who became a key part of my life in this country. Since I could only work 20 hours, I had a good balance between student, work and social life.

In this job I learned a lot about how English labour laws and rules work and it motivated me to try to find a full-time job once I graduated.

Convenient Accommodation

The accommodation was one of the things I liked the most. I lived in Jarratt Hall, a student residence. The online process was very easy to do. What I found very convenient is that when I booked the place, I answered a personality and interests questionnaire and they placed me with like-minded people.  Thanks to that, I was able to make friends and enjoy my stay with a very low risk of having conflicts with my roommates. As for security, I found it perfect because there is a 24/7 reception, also if something breaks down and stops working, the repair is very fast once it is reported to maintenance.

The location was very convenient because the campus was a 6-minute walk away and the shops, bus stops, gyms, restaurants and parks were very close.

Finances

In order to finance my studies, I took out a student loan through FIDERH, a support from the Mexican government. The best thing is that they have an agreement with the University of Birmingham with which they discounted 20% of my tuition fee. Thanks to my part-time job, I was able to pay my rent, food, and extra expenses like social activities and gym membership.

In conclusion, if you are thinking of coming to England to study, rest assured that it will be an unforgettable experience that will help you grow not only academically but also personally because leaving your comfort zone takes you to a world full of possibilities. Studying abroad is not just about learning from books but about discovering new perspectives, growing in ways you never imagined, and making your future and possibilities reach a global scale.

Study Clinical Nutrition in the UK

Learn from top academics in the field

I am Itzel, an international student enrolled in the clinical nutrition program at the University of Nottingham. I have always dreamed of studying abroad, just like you. I understand that the university application process can be overwhelming. That's why I would love to share some personal tips and my experience as a student in England with you.

WHAT MADE ME REALIZE THAT THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM WAS MY RIGHT CHOICE?

The University of Nottingham is known for its research power as part of the Russell Group. However, I finally decided to choose this university because it ranks among the top five universities in the UK for nutrition and food science. This opportunity to learn from top academics in the field would undoubtedly enhance my skills as a dietitian.

When choosing a university, it is helpful to have at least three options in mind. Take some time to check out and compare the study programs, professors, internships, and practical experiences they offer. Also, think about the city and the student life there. For example, Nottingham is known as one of the best cities for student life in the UK, and that is why I chose to study here.

WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM

I am constantly amazed by the tremendous opportunities the University of Nottingham provides for its students. A wide range of sports clubs and societies are available, from surfing and snow sports to ice hockey, archery, and gliding. I highly recommend joining the "Travel Society," which organizes affordable trips to different cities across the UK. Also, getting a "Railcard" will give you a 30% discount on your travels as a student.

I also admire the university for its unwavering commitment to mental health support and awareness for students. The level of care and consideration provided is genuinely admirable. Additionally, the professors consistently demonstrate a willingness to offer support in all circumstances.

When it comes to my favorite spots on campus, I really enjoy studying at the Hallward Library and George Green Library. If you decide to stay in a university residence hall, you will have free access to the David Ross sports village. You can take spinning and dance classes there, swim, and use the sports climbing facilities.

MY LIFE AS A STUDENT IN NOTTINGHAM

Nottingham has tons of green spaces, and the public transport is really great! The people here are super friendly and always make you feel at home. I recommend you to walk around the Sutton Bonington campus, Attenborough, Wollaton Park, or Highfields Park.

Also, remember to show your student ID for a 10% discount at certain stores. And make sure to download supermarket apps for awesome grocery deals!

PERSONAL GROWTH

It takes courage to move your entire life with just a suitcase. Everything changes in less than 24 hours, and suddenly, you find yourself in a new country with a different language and culture.

Some days will be more challenging than others, which is when good company becomes crucial. The friends you make in this new place will become your family in this adventure, as they truly understand the migration process, so lean on them. Stay in touch with your family and friends back home to feel connected. You'll be building a new life without realizing it, but you'll now have two places to call home. Embrace the process, allow yourself to feel, and learn from it all. Every experience teaches you something. Most importantly, remember to savor the moment because it all comes to an end, and one day, you will miss trying that new food in the UK, submitting that first project in a different language, or meeting new friends at university. Your dream is no longer just a dream – it's becoming a reality!

Despite all the challenges, studying in the UK has been an amazing experience and the best decision I've ever made.

NETWORKING

Stepping out of your comfort zone always leads you to meet people who share your hopes and dreams. I've met people from over 15 different countries, and it's expanded my personal and professional horizons. Learning from my classmates and friends has been eye-opening and has changed how I see things in life. Plus, it opens up the possibility of working on projects with people from all over the world in the future.

TIPS BEFORE COMING TO THE UK:

Some final tips I can give you are the following:

  • Contact Across the Pond to find out about scholarship or financing options. They helped me with my entire university application and even shared documents on how to write a CV or personal statement.
  • Remember to check out the supermarkets close to your new place and determine which bank options are best for processing your credit/debit card as a student.
  • Make sure to create a list of the products or foods you plan to purchase when you arrive in the UK. This will help you stay within budget and save time.
  • Find out where you need to go to pick up your BRP and sign up for your health insurance in the UK.
  • Once you get to the UK, make sure to find out where your classes are, and if you can, take a little tour around the campus to get a feel for the place.

I hope you find all of these tips helpful. Best of luck with your application! and remember if you have a dream, it's because you have the potential to make it a reality.
