As a Canadian Kinesiology graduate, the idea of pursuing my MSc in Physiotherapy in the UK felt like a daunting yet incredible opportunity as I had never been anywhere in Europe before. Thankfully, Across the Pond was an invaluable resource, guiding me through every step of the application process and easing my anxieties about relocating to the UK. Their support made what could have been an overwhelming experience remarkably smooth.
I had no expectations or idea of what living in Edinburgh would be like, yet it was everything I had hoped for and more. The city itself is beautiful and welcoming, and I quickly found my footing. I immersed myself in student life, joining both physiotherapy-specific communities and local volleyball teams, which allowed me to connect with people beyond my immediate program. These communities became a huge part of my experience, fostering friendships and a sense of belonging. Beyond my studies, Edinburgh served as a fantastic hub for exploring Europe. I seized every opportunity to travel, visiting numerous countries I had only ever dreamed of seeing. These adventures broadened my horizons immensely and created memories I will cherish forever. I truly made lifelong friends during my time there, and the connections forged in Edinburgh are ones I deeply value. In fact, my positive experience on this side of the world led me to move to London after graduation as I didn't feel my adventure was complete.
However, my academic experience at Queen Margaret University (QMU) presented a unique set of challenges and, ultimately, lessons. QMU undeniably taught me the immense importance of independent work, self-learning, and critical thinking. Yet, this wasn't due to a curriculum designed to foster these skills through exceptional teaching or highly organized and motivated faculty. Instead, it was often the absence of these very elements that necessitated a strong reliance on my own initiative. The program, at times, felt more focused on ensuring students simply passed and less on genuinely preparing us for the real world and high-quality patient care. There was a sense of being treated more like children than future healthcare professionals, which was at odds with the serious responsibility we would soon hold. While this aspect of the program was frustrating, it forced me to develop a resilience and proactive approach to my learning that will undoubtedly serve me well in my career.
My journey from a Canadian Kinesiology student to an MSc Physiotherapist in the UK was filled with incredible personal growth, unforgettable experiences, and profound friendships. While the academic approach at QMU had its shortcomings, the broader experience of living, studying, and exploring in Edinburgh and beyond was unreplaceable.
