My name is Andrea, I am originally from Chihuahua, Mexico, and I am currently living in the United Kingdom because I decided to pursue a dream: to grow both personally and professionally, to explore new places, meet new people and cultures; to learn not only in the classroom but also through everyday life; and to network with professionals from diverse backgrounds, with different ideas and perspectives from my own. All driven by a deep passion to become a better version of myself every day.
My international experience began during my Bachelor's degree in Psychology at Universidad del Valle de México, when I had the opportunity to do an academic exchange in Madrid, Spain. From that moment, I was determined to return abroad to pursue a master's degree and fully experience living overseas without health restrictions.
During the last months of my studies in Mexico, I discovered a strong calling for Organizational Psychology. Although internships were not mandatory for graduation, I approached my professor in this field to seek guidance. She offered me an internship position at the consulting agency where she worked as an HR manager. That experience was incredibly rewarding and further motivated me to pursue a career in Human Resources.
Eventually, I secured a role as a Senior Associate in HR Shared Services at Ford Mexico, where I worked for two years. It was a challenging job where I learned a lot, but as it was primarily administrative and transactional, I felt the need to deepen my knowledge, especially on the strategic side of HR. I am passionate about the role HR can play as a key business partner—aligning company goals with employee interests while promoting equity, diversity, inclusion, performance, motivation, wellbeing, and creativity. This motivated me to study a postgraduate degree that would equip me with the tools to make a meaningful impact.
While researching graduate programs abroad, I was especially drawn to the curriculum of the MSc in Human Resource Management at the University of Liverpool (UoL). Though the application process was relatively straightforward, a very helpful resource was the chat with student ambassadors, where I could ask questions and hear firsthand about the UoL experience.
From the moment I contacted Across the Pond, they provided invaluable support—from informative sessions to visa procedures. Although I had already submitted my application independently, they were always attentive and ready to assist with any questions. Their guidance made the entire process much smoother and less stressful.
Living and studying abroad has been challenging but incredibly enriching. The program exceeded my expectations: I had the privilege of learning from highly qualified professors and classmates from countries like India and China, creating a truly inclusive and diverse environment full of intercultural learning. I lived in university accommodation with international students, sharing unforgettable moments and participating in events that fostered a strong sense of community.
At first, I faced some cultural shocks: understanding different accents, adapting to local expressions like the common “Are you okay?”, and coping with the cold, windy, and dark winters of the UK. I also experienced homesickness, especially missing my family. However, maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, attending recreational events, and having a solid support network made a huge difference. The friendships I made during this time are among the most valuable takeaways. Despite the short time, our bonds grew very strong because we shared similar experiences and supported each other through both good and difficult times.
Liverpool is a friendly, welcoming, and vibrant city. People are very approachable, and international students are open to making new connections. The university offers numerous support services, including psychological and financial help, student societies, and sports clubs, making it easier to integrate and expand your social network.
This experience has transformed me deeply. I am taking away not only an academic degree but also significant personal growth. I know myself better, I am more independent, my English has improved, I have gained new professional skills, and I have broadened my horizons. I am proud to have achieved this dream and deeply grateful to everyone who supported me emotionally and financially.
If I could go back in time, there are a few things I would have liked to know beforehand: Liverpool is a perfect city for walking; the campus is very close to the city center, so I hardly used public transport except to visit nearby cities like York, Manchester, Chester, or Formby Beach. I would have also loved to know that traveling to London from Liverpool can be expensive, but there are many closer, more affordable destinations ideal for day trips. Additionally, I would have enjoyed knowing that Liverpool was named the best city in the UK for food in 2025 by Time Out. Streets like Lark Lane, Bold Street, and Castle Street have amazing restaurants—I haven’t found one I didn’t love.
Finally, I wish I had realized how quickly the academic year passes. My advice: enjoy every moment, step out of your comfort zone, and seize every opportunity that comes your way. Studying abroad is not just an academic decision; it’s a life-changing adventure.
