Study at King's College, London

Offered me unique opportunities to stand out

I first became interested in studying in the UK during my undergraduate degree, when I interned with the Department of Trade at my city’s British Consulate. That experience opened my eyes to the incredible opportunities the UK has to offer. Discovering Across the Pond was a turning point, I was excited to find a supportive community that could guide me through what initially felt like an overwhelming process.

Living in London exceeded all my expectations. I chose the city because I had always dreamed of experiencing a vibrant, global capital with endless cultural opportunities, where something new is always happening just beyond your doorstep. And it truly was like that! My free time was filled with museum visits, West End shows, day trips across the UK, and friendships that I know will last a lifetime.

Academically, I am proud to be part of the King’s College London alumni community. KCL’s reputation is well-earned, though I was surprised by the stark difference between undergraduate and postgraduate experiences. I would definitely recommend connecting with the faculty before accepting your offer to ensure you’ve chosen the programme that is best fitted for your interests. Much of my learning happened outside the classroom, with lectures and seminars serving as valuable springboards. My dissertation evolved into a topic I knew nothing about before starting my programme, and that journey of discovery ended up being the most rewarding part of my studies.

For students considering a postgraduate degree in the UK, I would emphasize the importance of strong time-management skills. Much of the learning is independent, so how you structure your time directly impacts how much you can get out of both your academic and cultural experiences. Finding a Mexican community gave me a sense of home and grounding, but I also recommend connecting with friends from around the world, as you’ll gain perspectives you’d never encounter otherwise. During breaks, I was able to visit friends across Europe, which is an opportunity I will always cherish.

The job market in London can feel daunting, but KCL offered me unique opportunities to stand out. One highlight was a fellowship at the Venice Biennale, an unexpected but deeply fulfilling experience. I also worked part-time at KCL residences throughout the academic year, which not only gave me financial security but also connected me more closely with the student community. Paid opportunities also came my ways as a student representative for my programme. My biggest piece of advice: say yes to opportunities, big or small.

London is undeniably expensive, but with the right mindset and by actively seeking out opportunities, you can make the most of your postgraduate journey in the UK—academically, professionally, and personally.
