HISTORY OF NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY  

As the Industrial Revolution, fuelled by some of the North East’s own innovators and engineers, changed Britain and the world, the history of Newcastle University began. In 1834, in the Barber Surgeon’s Company Hall of Newcastle, a School of Medicine and Surgery was founded to meet the demand for surgeons and doctors.  

As pressure mounted for engineers, architects, chemists and biologists needed in the growing shipbuilding, iron, steel, mining and agricultural industries, a College of Physical Science was formed in 1871. By 1908, the two colleges had become one division of the federal University of Durham, and Newcastle had become a great city: a leading player in the creation of the modern world. The two colleges merged in 1937, forming King’s College and pioneering regionally important applied sciences, such as geology, mining, naval architecture, engineering and agriculture. 

With the dissolution of the federal University of Durham in 1963, King's College became the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. 

Today, Newcastle University operates in three locations – Newcastle, Singapore, and Malaysia. The university works with strategic partners, industry collaborators and employers around the world.

Additionally, there is a lot of interdisciplinary work across faculties and degree courses at Newcastle University. At undergraduate level, you can study a Combined Honours degree which gives you the opportunity to take up to three different subjects within social sciences and humanities within the same degree. There are also options for flexible degree programmes for Engineering and Computer Science. They offer a common first year. This means you can change the specialty of the degree at the end of the first year, giving you more time to decide. 
 

LIFE ON CAMPUS 

Newcastle University campus is located in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, offering you a campus feel with the convenience of being within a city. There are two main sides to the campus – a mix of old and new. The traditional, redbrick side of the campus is home to the Students’ Union, Humanities, Medical and Engineering buildings. There is a more modern side of the campus for the Business and Computing schools, which are located in an area called ‘The Helix’, where you will also find office spaces and buildings such as the National Data Centre. The famous football stadium for NUFC, St. James Park, is opposite The Helix. The Helix has impressive facilities and was a £500 million development between Newcastle University and Newcastle City Council. There are several art and history museums on campus, within the university faculty buildings, as well a theatre, university gym, three libraries, and many different cafés and restaurants. The local hospital is also on campus, attached to the Newcastle University Medical School. As the university is within the city, there are many shops, restaurants and banks close by. The campus is very beautiful and is surrounded by two large parks – Leazes Park and Exhibition Park. These parks and green spaces are great areas to relax in between lectures. 
 

STUDENT SUPPORT AT NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY

The Student Wellbeing Service offers a warm, confidential space for students to access one-to-one mental health support, counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy, resilience workshops and wellbeing consultations. Scholars can access urgent assistance when they need it, and ongoing guidance to help them manage academic pressure, culture shock, homesickness or personal challenges during their studies. The Disability Support team works closely with students to design personalised support plans, such as alternative assessment arrangements, lecture captioning, adapted equipment, reader or note-taker support, mobility solutions and accessible digital learning. The campus is designed with physical accessibility in mind, and there are inclusive teaching practices ensure that scholars can engage fully with every aspect of their studies. Academic wellbeing is further supported through specialist services, including the Writing Development Centre, Maths Aid and academic skills coaching. These services help scholars build confidence in research, critical writing and communication, especially if they are learning in a new academic culture. Reasonable adjustments are always available, and scholars are encouraged to discuss any learning needs without stigma. Practical and social support are also central to the student experience. NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY FACILITIES  

Newcastle University has a range of award-winning facilities available for staff and students. These include two main libraries, as well as an exclusive law library, and language resource centre with access to resources in hundreds of different languages.  

In terms of sports facilities, the university has recently invested £30m into brand-new and refurbished spaces. They make your sporting experiences better than ever before. The new facilities include: a world-class gym, four brand-new studio spaces with audio-visual effects, including a spin cycle studio, four glass-backed squash courts, an eight-court sports hall, a high-performance strength and conditioning suite and three new high-tech artificial pitches at Cochrane Park.  

Each course and faculty have their own unique and state-of-the-art facilities. In Fine Art, you will find a materials shop, drawing studio, and the Hatton Art Gallery. In Architecture, there are lively studio spaces and scanning suites. For Film and Media students, there is a Culture Lab with editing suites and sound studios. The new Engineering building, the Stephenson building, is particularly impressive. The site features: inclusive education spaces, such as the new Makerspace. This is a student-centred zone for interdisciplinary collaboration, creativity and entrepreneurship. The building also has digital learning spaces with large flat-floor areas for flexible working, multi-purpose teaching laboratories with flexibility to support multiple disciplines and two lecture theatres, each with capacity for 180 people. For Computer Science students, the Urban Sciences Building has specialist facilities including a MakerSpace, Data Visualisation Lab, Media Studio, Bioinformatics labs, Robots and VR. For Marine Sciences, there is a Marine Research Laboratory and research vessel on a nearby beach at Cullercoats.

ACCOMMODATION AT NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY 

Newcastle University guarantee accommodation for the first year for all undergraduate and postgraduate taught students if they have an offer and apply before the deadline, which is usually in June each year. Most accommodation is found within the city-centre and no more than a 10-minute walk from campus. The university offers several different types of accommodation which all vary in price. Accommodation is usually a flat of between 3-10 people and includes a fully equipped kitchen, a private bedroom, and a private or shared bathroom depending on the price. Some accommodation also has studio apartments on offer. The accommodation is extremely cost-effective and starts from less than £400/month. A lot of the accommodation has 24/7 security and a reception desk, as well as a student life committee who organise activities throughout the year. Some accommodation also comes with a gym and common or games rooms. Staying in university accommodation is a great way to make friends, however, there are also lots of private providers for accommodation in Newcastle city-centre. 
 

INTERNATIONAL FOCUS  

Newcastle University and Newcastle upon Tyne are highly international. The university has a global approach and welcomes students from more than 135 different countries. Regarding Latin America, most students come from Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, and Ecuador.
