RUSSELL GROUP

You may come across references to the Russell Group, an association of leading UK research universities. But how important is this group, and are there specific advantages to attending a university affiliated with it? As you explore your options, you’ll likely encounter the term frequently—several of our partner universities are members of the Russell Group.

What is the Russell Group?

The Russell Group is a group of 24 selected universities in the UK that are dedicated to maintaining and conducting the best research, developing outstanding lecturers, and creating a fantastic educational experience for both students and staff. There is a focus on creating networks and connections with the business community, public and private.

The goal of this group is to maintain the best conditions to be able to continue with the development of social, economic and cultural breakthroughs, with a focus on research and learning. The group has specific strategies, policy development, and communication between them to maintain focus.

If you’re familiar with the "Ivy League" in the United States, the Russell Group can be seen as a similar concept in the UK, in terms of its origins and academic focus. Universities within the Russell Group are highly regarded both nationally and internationally for their research, academic excellence, and reputation.

BACKGROUND OF RUSSELL GROUP

The Russell Group was established in 1994 by 17 universities that met regularly in London at the Hotel Russell—hence the name—to collaborate on advancing research and academic development across their institutions.

In 2006, the Russell Group became a formal organisation with its own board, dedicated to ensuring that member universities have the resources and support needed to address challenges through research and education. The board is composed of one representative from each member institution, with the chair rotating every three years.

Over time, additional universities have joined the group, bringing the total membership to 24 institutions.
