Discovering Newcastle Through Landscape
My Experience Studying Landscape at Newcastle University
My name is Karla; I’m from México, and at 25, I’d like to share a bit about my experience living and studying in Newcastle upon Tyne—a city that, in my view, is an ideal place to learn about landscape, architecture, and history. As part of Newcastle University’s MSc in Advanced Landscape Planning and Management program, I was able to explore various sites across Northeast England, ranging from coastal and woodland landscapes to heritage sites. It was a chance to put classroom knowledge into practice while also discovering everything this region has to offer. You get to experience the changing seasons and weather, and even watch the city transform month by month. As an architect, I was also captivated by the beautiful streets, historic buildings, castles, and, of course, the impressive bridges. I chose to stay in the south-central part of the city; this kept me within a 25-minute walk of the university while allowing me to enjoy a quieter, less crowded neighbourhood.
A city shaped by history and everyday life
Newcastle is known for its industrial past; however, today it’s a city full of opportunities. With its city-centre cafés, pubs, and diverse restaurants, you will always find a way to satisfy those little cravings for a taste of home. Although dining out can be somewhat expensive compared to Mexico, you can find international ingredients at supermarkets like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons and get creative with your recipes. Also, be sure to visit the local Grainger Market, where you can always find fresh fruit and foods from around the world.
Must-visit spots in the Northeast
From Newcastle, a train ride takes you to Edinburgh, one of Scotland's most famous tourist destinations. You can tour its castle, walk through streets steeped in history, and listen to the famous Scottish bagpipes. You can also take a 15 minute train to Durham, renowned for its historic cathedral and as a filming location for scenes from Harry Potter. The surrounding scenery—especially in autumn—is among the most distinctive and beautiful in the UK. Just a short metro ride away from Newcastle lies Tynemouth, one of Northeast England's loveliest coastal towns, boasting Victorian charm. It is a fantastic place to spend the summer with friends and try the famous fish and chips. Studying in the Northeast also gave me the chance to explore nature reserves, farms, and medieval castles just a few miles from Newcastle. Cragside, Seaton Delaval, and Kielder Forest are just a few of the area's hidden gems. If you are already living in the region and enjoy hiking or camping, the Lake District is a must-visit destination to add to your list.
Nightlife in Newcastle upon Tyne
If you enjoy partying and nightlife, Newcastle is definitely the place for you. Its multicultural atmosphere and vibrant student life make it a top destination for students. You will always find pubs and clubs playing music to suit every taste—from electronic music and Latin rhythms to silent discos. If you are into Latin music, some of these venues even offer salsa and bachata classes; it’s a great place to meet people from all over the world.
Find your own rhythm
In Newcastle, you’ll always find something that suits you—from outdoor cinema and library book clubs to weekly running clubs. There is always an event happening in the city to keep you busy, though you’ll also find quiet spots where you can simply sit and read or enjoy a cup of tea. The weather can be a bit cooler compared to cities like London; however, the days get longer and a little warmer during the summer. If you come to Newcastle, explore every corner, walk up and down its steep streets, and enjoy all the things the Toon has to offer!
