Hello. My name is Karla, and I am currently finishing my Master of Science in Advanced Landscape Planning and Management at Newcastle University in the UK. Although I am now just one step away from graduating, I know that the decision to study abroad can be filled with uncertainty—especially when considering the cost of living and university tuition fees. That is why I would like to share a bit of my story with you.
My interest in studying in the UK was driven by the high academic standards of its universities and the prestige associated with many of their programmes. I also had a genuine desire to improve my English and gain international experience that would allow me to grow both professionally and personally. From the very beginning, the team at Across the Pond guided me through the university application process and shared calls for applications for financing my studies abroad. In my case, I was awarded a scholarship for postgraduate study abroad by SECIHTI (Secretaría de Ciencia, Humanidades, Tecnología e Innovación) in Mexico, which helped me cover my living expenses and a portion of my tuition fees. If you are from Mexico, this is an excellent option. I recommend checking the call for applications as soon as it becomes available and making sure to apply to your chosen universities well in advance.
Part of my tuition costs were covered by a FIDERH educational loan. In my personal experience, it is one of the best options available in Mexico, as it offers a generous loan amount at a low interest rate. Additionally, you have 10 years to repay the loan, including a one-year grace period after completing your studies. This allows you to return to Mexico, find a job, and get settled before the repayment phase begins.
During my studies, payments were made according to the official schedule provided by FIDERH at the start of the contract. In my case, the idea of taking out a loan seemed a bit intimidating at first; however, while pursuing my studies, I had the opportunity to undertake a paid internship with a British company, which allowed me to start earning some pounds. Similarly, you can always explore opportunities for internships or part-time jobs.
My advice one year before starting your studies in the UK
● Create an initial budget: Factor in tuition fees, visa costs, and health insurance, and research the cost of living in your destination city. This will allow you to set a realistic budget and determine which types of financial aid suit you best—and how much you need from each source. Many accommodation options require upfront rent payments and/or security deposits, so I recommend having some savings set aside. This can help you secure a place in your preferred location and find accommodation closer to your university.
● Start early: Many programmes have application deadlines, and applying early increases your chances of a successful outcome. Likewise, with loans such as FIDERH, applying early can help ensure that funds are released on time and prevent delays in payments. Keep in mind that the application process often takes weeks or even months and may require gathering specific documents that, if you don't already have them, will need to be obtained. Applying early will save you the stress of scrambling to find missing documents at the last minute.
● Don't be afraid to ask questions: The Across the Pond team is there to answer your questions; however, you can also find information on official financial aid websites, FIDERH video tutorials, or social media groups where others share their experiences and answer your questions. Additionally, look for testimonials and talk to people who have already completed their studies using a FIDERH loan. You’ll be surprised by the number of positive experiences. This way, you can dispel myths and create your own opinion.
While every experience is unique, in my experience, the process was very clear from the start. The Across the Pond team was there at every stage—from gathering documents and submitting applications to receiving the results. One important point to consider is that having a higher commercial valuation for the property you register may increase your chances of qualifying for the maximum loan amount. These are small details that can make a difference in the amount awarded. Finally, remember to open a bank account as soon as you arrive in your destination country. This can help ensure the timely receipt of your funds. Remember to read each call for applications carefully, review the requirements, and stay on top of the deadlines.
