Wings of Change in the UK

The Monarch Effect: Finding Power in Unity

Monarch butterflies fly more than 5,000 kilometers to reach Mexico. While a single butterfly might seem small and fragile at first glance, its true strength lies in its unity with the swarm. Creating community and joining forces has always inspired me: just like monarchs, when we come together, we can go further and achieve real change. That was precisely my goal when I set out for the UK.

Renewables and Women in STEM: Driving My Purpose

I am Jennifer, an MSc in Energy Engineering Management student at Durham University and a British Council Women in STEM scholar. My core motivation for pursuing postgraduate studies in the UK was to build community alongside changemakers dedicated to climate action and closing the gender gap. The UK offered the ultimate ecosystem for my two passions: cutting-edge renewable energy projects and the empowerment of female leadership in engineering. Studying here was a dream I refused to give up on: after an initial scholarship setback, I worked even harder, reapplied, and secured it with the dedicated guidance of Across the Pond.

Fairytale Castles and Global Friendships at Durham

During my master's, I chose not to let fear hold me back. Arriving in Durham felt like stepping straight into a storybook. Experiencing collegiate life allowed me to attend formal dinners, celebrate events in historic castles, and wear an academic gown with authentic Harry Potter vibes. I built an international family with peers from across the globe, traveled to more than seven European countries, and found a true second home. I embraced every door that opened: from performing at the Edinburgh Festival Carnival to serving as an International Student Ambassador, joining the UK-wide Student Shadow Board of the Women's Engineering Society, and receiving an invitation from the Royal Academy of Engineering in recognition of my leadership.

One Conversation Away from a New Opportunity

The deepest lesson I take away is that knowledge belongs to those ready to listen. While I cannot live a hundred lifetimes, connecting with a hundred individuals who shared their authentic journeys shaped me into a more open and empathetic leader. Meaningful bonds ignite in the most unexpected places, whether in a keynote hall or a café queue. You are always just one conversation away from a life-changing opportunity.

Networking Lessons I Wish I Knew Before Landing

Looking back, I wish I had realized sooner how crucial networking is and how to pitch my strengths with confidence. It felt intimidating initially, but taking the leap to try new things is where real growth happens. Never hesitate to reach out; your next breakthrough might start with a simple hello. When you follow your passion, the right community will always meet you there. Above all, the year flies by in an instant: leave no regrets on the table, and whenever you are in doubt, just go for it.

Ready to Soar Even Further

Studying in the UK transformed my life and gifted me a diverse network that walks beside me today. This year proved that while an individual might seem small against global challenges, collective unity makes us unstoppable. Just like the monarch butterflies after their epic migration, I finish this chapter ready to fly even further with everything I have gained. Do not be afraid to take that first flap of your wings: when you build community, you can reach any destination.
