Letter of Recommendation for Undergraduate Applicants

You have been carefully selected by one of your students to help them fulfil their dream of studying at a university in the UK!

For this purpose, the letter of recommendation must be written in English and cannot exceed 4000 characters (including spaces). In addition, please follow these guidelines:

  • Unlike traditional letters, the letter of recommendation does not need a greeting, introduction, or closing remarks.
  • The letter only needs short comments for each of the three sections (see below).
  • Please write short sentences in bullet list format, the universities would like clear and concise information from you regarding the student.
  • The recommendation letter will be sent to all of the universities that your student applies to (if more than one), so please refrain from writing names of specific universities.

First Section:
A general statement about your school/college/institution.

  • A short statement about your school and the educational system in your country. Here, you may also include any available specialisms, number of pupils, approximate percentage of students who continue on to higher education, and other relevant information.
  • Any subjects not available at your school that might affect the student’s application in the field (for example, if your school does not offer Biology and the student is applying for Medicine).
  • Other information that might have affected the student (for example, frequent change in staff, construction work, etc.).

Second Section:
Information about extenuating circumstances which may have impacted the student’s education and achievement.

  • Are there any circumstances that might have affected the student during their education, for example any illness, injury, personal difficulties in the home? NB! Make sure you have the student’s permission to share any information that might be sensitive.
  • If there are no specific circumstances you wish to add, you may skip this section.

Third Section:
Outline any other supportive information, specific to the student and relevant to the course(s) applied for, that you think the universities should be aware of.

  • Information about the student’s academic achievements (and any relevant subjects the student is currently taking or has completed).
  • If the student has any other accomplishments that might strengthen their application, please write a short statement about these.
  • If you have knowledge of relevant work experience or other relevant experience the student has undertaken, please add this as well.

The Letter of Recommendation should be written in Word or another format that supports copying.

Unfortunately, the British application system does not allow us to upload documents to a student’s application. Therefore, the text will need to be copied into the application to assure that the text is submitted verbatim to the universities.

The letter does not need to be signed, but you will need to include your contact details (name, position and professional email address) in case the university wants to verify the reference.

CONFIDENTIALITY AND SUBMISSION OF THE LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION

Please send the letter of recommendation directly to the student for them to upload to our online application form. If for any reason you prefer not to send this to the student, you can upload this in our form on this website. We will then send confirmation to both you and the student that this has been received by the student’s advisor. Please be aware that in line with the privacy laws specified in GDPR, the student has a right to a copy of the letter of recommendation if they should ask for this.

The exemption to this is if you explicitly specify the letter of recommendation should remain confidential. If you would like to keep the letter confidential, please save the document as “Confidential” before uploading this to our website.

Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Thank you for your help!
