Study linguistics abroad

Provided everything I needed for my studies

As an EFL teacher, studying in the UK has always been a dream of mine. The rich history, diverse culture, and high academic standards were irresistible. I wanted to immerse myself in a new environment, challenge myself academically, and gain a global perspective that would enhance both my personal and professional growth.

I chose the University of Essex because of its outstanding reputation in the Department of Language and Linguistics, and its supportive global community. From the moment I stepped on campus, I felt at home. The modern facilities, beautiful library, and state-of-the-art labs provided everything I needed for my studies. The campus is vibrant, with beautiful green spaces to relax and socialise.

My accommodation was comfortable and conveniently located. I came with my husband, and we had a self-contained apartment with views of the lake. Everything worked well, and in case of any issues, the university was always quick to respond.

Student life in the UK is quite different from my home country, Chile. Here, there is a strong emphasis on independence and self-directed learning. The teachers are wonderful at explaining things and sharing their passion for the subject. Outside of classes, the diverse cultural interactions and numerous student societies have enriched my university experience beyond measure.

I pursued an MA in Applied Linguistics, a field that has always fascinated me. The course was comprehensive and engaging, covering everything from theory to practice. The practical approach and opportunities for real-world application made it incredibly rewarding.

Colchester, with its mix of historical charm and modern amenities, has quickly become my second home. I’m still here five years after graduation! I love exploring its quaint streets, visiting the local shops and markets, and enjoying the vibrant events. There's always something new to do and discover!

In my spare time as a student, I enjoyed joining various student clubs and societies, apart from making use of the gym membership. These activities helped me make friends from different backgrounds and cultures. We often hung out in the campus cafes, explored the town, or took short trips to nearby cities. Even today, we’re still in touch.

Before applying, I wish I had known more about the importance of balancing academic and social life. It's crucial to stay organised and seek help when needed. For those considering studying abroad, I highly recommend it. It's an unforgettable experience that broadens your horizons in unimaginable ways.

I applied through Across the Pond, and the experience was seamless. Their guidance and support throughout the application process were invaluable. They made everything straightforward, from choosing the right university to navigating visa requirements and even scholarship opportunities.

Study Politics in England

I am happy I made the decision to study abroad

My name is Debbie and I currently do my Masters degree at the University of York, studying Conflict, Governance and Development.

Across the Pond was of great help through my entire process; first, by helping me choose a University suited to my interests; then, by being able to apply to the different universities through their website, making it easier and faster; finally, by supporting me through the process of getting ready to arrive to the UK, with topics such as visa documents, finding accommodation, etc. They also helped me apply for a CONAHCYT scholarship, which I got. I am very grateful to Across the Pond for making it easier for me, since the process in itself is quite long and complicated, but with their company I didn’t struggle as much.

Regarding my experience in the UK, it has been quite good. I had been here a few times before and I have experience studying and working in English, so I did not have any problems with that. However, it is quite difficult to get used to a different routine, different habits, lack of sun, lots of rain. It is important to find a good support system in the new place that you find yourself in; it is especially useful to find international friends, since they are the ones who understand what you’re going through. I have friends from Malaysia, Korea, Colombia, Norway, Hong Kong, among many other countries. We like to go out to pubs, to travel to small cities near York and to play board games.

Finally, I am very satisfied with my decision to study at the University of York. It is a very good school with a good level of education, and they are extremely accommodating to international students, organizing several trips for us and being open to any questions we have about any sort of topic. There are very good and cheap options for accommodations on campus as well, and I live on a private student accommodation outside campus, which is also a good option if you do not find space on the ones on campus. York is a very small city and nothing is really that far from the school, so there is no problem about that.

Overall, my experience in the United Kingdom, in the University of York and with Across the Pond have been very fulfilling and I am happy I made the decision to study abroad. If you are interested in studying in the United Kingdom, definitely contact Across the Pond and consider doing so in the University of York.

Cheers!

- Debbie

Applying to study in the UK can be tricky and confusing when doing things on your own. Take all of the stress out of the process by using Across the Pond’s free expertise and guidance. To help you on your way here are some things to be aware of:

APPLICATION DEADLINES FOR ADMISSION TO UK UNIVERSITIES

In the UK, admissions are mainly on a rolling basis – meaning it is "first come, first served" until the programme is filled. We therefore recommend that you apply as early as you can, and preferably before Christmas if you want to start your studies the following autumn. Exceptions: Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Sciences as well as all courses at the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, and also selected courses at master's level. Read more about the time of year you should apply to have the greatest chance of being granted admission.

HOW TO CHOOSE WHAT TO STUDY AND WHICH UNIVERSITY

Choosing what to study and which university to go to can be a very difficult process, especially when you may not be able to go and visit to find out which option you like best. Our advisors regularly visit the universities and help hundreds of students apply to a wide range of subjects every single year. They will be able to help you determine which universities and courses are best for you based on your academic background and the universities' minimum requirements, as well as your wishes and needs for what you would like your study experience to look like and cost.

HOW TO APPLY TO STUDY IN THE UK

We make it very easy for you! We have our own application form where you fill in your information and upload your application documents. We check that everything has been entered correctly before the application is submitted and that way you do not have to worry that you have made any mistakes that may result in you not being accepted.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO APPLY FOR STUDIES IN THE UK?

To apply for studies at UK universities you need:

  • One academic letter of recommendation if you are applying for undergraduate studies, and often two if you are applying for Master’s degree programmes. We have advice and tips that you can give to the person who will be writing this for you, so that together we ensure that they include all the information the UK universities are looking for. For postgraduate applicants you may also be required to submit your CV. Please note that how to write a CV for UK universities may differ from how they are expected to be written in your home country.

  • Preliminary grades or final diploma (final diploma will be sent as soon as you have received it).

  • Personal Statement. It is very important that it is you who has written your personal statement, but we will help you with what is important to include (or not include!) based on what and where you are hoping to study, in addition to proofreading it for you. This is a very important part of the application and whether or not you get in may be decided based on this statement. Some universities and courses have additional requirements and expectations in terms of what they want to see here  and it is very important that you adhere to these indications. That's why we spend a lot of time making your personal statement as good as it can be.

  • Note: Some courses will also require an audition, portfolio and other admissions tests.

DOES IT COST ANYTHING TO APPLY TO UK UNIVERSITIES?

When applying for undergraduate programmes, an application fee is required which is paid to the admissions service. In addition, some universities charge an application fee for some of the Master’s programmes they offer. These application fees are payable directly to the University or the University and Colleges Admissions Service and not to us. We will never ask for any payment or card information from you and all help from us is free of charge.

Some universities will require a deposit to secure your study place after you have been granted admission, this will later be deducted from the tuition fee. After you have been granted admission and your place has been confirmed, you will have to pay a fee to apply for a student visa in order to access healthcare in the UK during your studies. If you wish to live in the universities’ student housing you must apply to be allocated a room before the housing application deadline and once this has been processed you are often required to pay deposit to secure the accommodation. When you eventually enrol in the university, you will pay the tuition fee. Prices in the UK vary greatly and if you have any questions about the cost of studying in the UK, please get in touch. We are happy to help you find affordable options!

HOW DOES ACROSS THE POND HELP THROUGH THE APPLICATION PROCESS?

We will walk you through each step of the application process and help you with everything you need to consider before deciding whether or not you want to apply to study in the UK. If you choose to complete an application we will help you with absolutely everything from start to finish.

We are here to help you whether you have questions related to studying in the UK or want more information about selected universities or courses. Contact us whether you just want more information or if you are ready to get started with your application!

Study Global Literature and Culture abroad

I love interdisciplinarity!

My journey began in Mexico City, at a Euro-postgraduate fair with my friends from University. We were going through an after-degree identity crisis. I felt even more lost because I was passionate about many disciplines, but they were all very dispersed. I studied Hispanic Literatures at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and I thought I could continue my studies at a Spanish university and decide if I wanted to study culture, history or literature. I saw the Across the Pond booth and filled out a form. Shortly after I received an email from my advisor, and from there we started talking about all the different master's degrees in the United Kingdom. After many more emails and a year of preparation I began my master's in Global Culture and Literature at the University of York. At the time I didn't really know why I chose this program beyond "how interesting!", but now I better understand why it was such an important part of my path, eight years later and just about to finish my PhD at the University of Nottingham: I love interdisciplinarity!

The educational experience was very different from what I knew. They are have short terms, with few subjects and few hours, and the workload compensates for that free time. I think the hard part about this, for me, was that I had to learn better self-management, and being alone in a new place! But it was worth it, and adjusting to university and social life was easier. I was surprised by the number of activities and events for all tastes. I even went to a “Retired Dog Petting Day.” Little by little I started making a family among the international roommates that I randomly had with the student accommodation, my classmates from the master's degree, and the community of Mexicans that Across the Pond helps you form from the moment you arrive.

I think the only thing I wish I'd known before moving (and didn't care to research) is that there really isn't much sun. I knew, from the movies, that it is a rainy and cold country, but I also knew that it rains more in Mexico City than in London, so it didn't seem so serious to me. What I didn't know is that during the winter it gets dark from 4:00 pm. And when it's daytime, weeks can go by without seeing the sun or the blue sky. But I also didn't know that Mexico had taught me to love the United Kingdom, and that the United Kingdom would teach me to love Mexico more.

Study International Development abroad - study development studies in the UK

The University of Leeds provides an incredible study atmosphere

Studying abroad was something I wanted to do since I was little; I craved the independence, the idea of being exposed to a multicultural environment and studying something I was passionate about. The UK was a no brainer for me, not only it offers one of the highest educations around the world, but also it was a country that appeal to me given that I already speak the language.

Student Life

One of the biggest differences between studying in the UK and in my home country, Peru, must be the student life. While in Peru, most people live with their parents throughout their university years, in the UK you reach a level of independence from a very young age. However, the thing that surprised me the most, was the student life at campus; from spending hours in the library, to going for a pint after class at the Old Bar on campus. Another major difference was the idea of living with friends, which felt like a sleepover every day. In general, I believe that the University of Leeds provides an incredible study atmosphere to dive deep into your studies, making the experience incredibly pleasant. Choosing the University of Leeds has been one of the best decisions of my life. The campus is beautiful, with different architectures all over it, in some areas, modern buildings and in other the traditional red-brick buildings. The green areas with rabbits running through campus motivated me to go even when the weather was not the nicest. My favourite place on campus has to be St George’s Field. It’s a large green space situated near the School of Chemical and Process Engineering. I cannot even remember the amount of picnics and strolls I did with my friends in that area. I think that what appeal me the most to it, was the close contact with nature and that it is a quiet space in which you can go and relax and enjoy yourself.

My Course

I decided to study International Development which was a bit surprising for my family and friends because they had never heard anything about it. To begin with, it is not a course that was on offer at any universities in my home country and that idea terrified my parents. However, after reading about it, my parents were completely happy and excited with the idea. Given that it was not a well-known course I did LOTS of research and discovered University of Leeds. The curricula was completely different from others I have researched online and that is what drawn me to the university. The campus, the modules they offer, the vibrant student life everyone talk about are a couple of things convinced me straight away that Leeds was the university for me, and I’m so thankful I listen. After 4 years, I cannot express how much I have enjoyed my course and the university; from the academic challenges to the friends, I have made along the way. My course challenge me to open my mind to diverse perspectives and be able to critically analyse political and economic measures that have been taken. It taught me things about my own country that I was completely unaware of and made me realized the impact of the decisions we, collectively, as a society have on others.

Leeds as a City

Studying in Leeds has been a wonderful experience, not only is the campus is extremely pretty but the city has lots of things to offer. When I first started university I was scared of not being in a ‘big city’, but Leeds did not disappoint. The number of activities the city has to offer exceeded my expectations. From numerous gigs to restaurants all over the city, it never feels too small. The friendliness of people, the vibrancy of the city, and the atmosphere of the university has made my time here unforgettable. In conclusion, if I could do it all over again I would a 100%.

Study Law in the UK, LLB Law in England

Why study Law in the UK?

I am originally from Canada and decided to study law in the UK. When I applied with Across the Pond originally, I was 21 years old and wanted to pursue my education further and wanted to experience something new. I had lived in the same country and city since birth and ultimately will settle there in the future, but I wanted to go out and have experiences that would benefit me as a person and help me better connect with others.

The UK is a multicultural country just like Canada, there are other similarities between the countries such as the language and shared history. The UK is also different enough that it would introduce me to new experiences, cultures and would allow me to see how a country like mine has diversified themselves.

The UK has over 100 law schools around the country to choose which is a greater amount than where I lived. Based on where you want to live while studying you have a wide range of schools to choose from in each region. UK degrees are accepted in other common law countries such as Canada meaning that you can study the subjects you want outside of your country and still be able to convert your degrees and use them in your home country after you leave the UK.

An undergraduate LLB degree is three years which is significantly less than some other countries which typically take up to 7 years, this is a quicker and could be a cheaper route for some people. Coming to the UK on a student visa also allows you to work while studying. You can work up to 20 hours a week during term time which allows you to make money during the year but also apply for jobs in the field that you’re studying and do internships that will look impressive to potential employers. Having jobs or internships in other countries may be an asset to some employers and is a good opportunity to network.

The University of Law

I picked the University of Law because they have multiple different campuses throughout the UK meaning that you could travel to different locations to complete your course and get to experience more of the UK. The university offers a wide range of legal courses and offers 2 Canadian courses at their London location which makes it easier to convert your degree over once you return to Canada. They also have a huge international student population meaning that there will be many students in the same situation as you, you will get to meet new people from around the world and share classrooms with locals. They also allow for you to do courses online, in person or hybrid based on the way you want to study.

The class sizes are small allowing the tutor to be able to support students better and for you to make a connection with the tutors and your peers. The smaller classrooms allow for you to ask more questions openly, do more interactive work with others and allows the tutor to make sure all the students are following at the same pace.

The school offers services such as study skills throughout the year to help students improve their grades and develop new skills they may not have had before to succeed in their courses. Many resources are offered throughout the year to make final exams easier for students and there is free counselling and an employability service where they help you build resumes, apply to jobs and internships. Through the school I was able to apply for a 2-day shadowing scheme at the local family courthouse which I was able to put on my resume and gave me an insight into the workings of the courthouse from the perspective of a judge.

Living in Birmingham

Compared to other UK cities such as London Birmingham is much more affordable for students in terms of living costs (restaurants, rent, groceries). If you are looking for entertainment the Symphony Hall is home to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, if you are looking for culture the Birmingham Hippodrome (musical theatre) attracts over 500,000 visitors a year.  The Bullring is the UK’s most popular shopping destination with more than 160 shops and restaurants in the heart of the city.

Using Across the Pond

I applied through Across the Pond and found the application process to be stress free and easy. I was put in contact with an advisor that talked me through the process of applying and asked me what I wanted to study, where and suggested potential schools for me based on my interests and my previous grades and education. They helped with the UCAS process which is how students in the UK apply to university which was a new process for me. My advisor helped me with my personal statement and made edits where appropriate and there was a lot of advice and pamphlets given on the visa process.

Study Law in the UK

Why study in the UK?

I am a Canadian student who applied through Across the Pond. When I was looking at where I wanted to go to university, I looked at many different countries and cities and decided on the UK which is home to some of the top-ranked universities, world-class education, and good quality teaching.

Another benefit for me was that a UK degree would be recognized worldwide (the UK is a common law country like the one I am from) I could return to Canada once I finish my course convert my degree and work in Canada.

I enjoy living in the UK because I get to experience new cultures, explore new places, and meet new people. Living in the UK I got to experience holidays which are only celebrated in the UK (Kings Coronation, Platinum Jubilee of Elizabeth II), it was very interesting to experience these events of the monarchs and being able to try new foods (fish and chips, Yorkshire Pudding, etc.)

Living in Birmingham

Birmingham is the second largest city in the United Kingdom. It is a safe city to live in with a relatively low crime rate. The monthly cost of apartment rent and food shopping is not too bad compared to a city like London.

Birmingham has interesting places to explore, such as the Library of Birmingham. This is the largest public library in Europe, it has books, computers and a viewpoint at the top called the Secret Garden (which has a nice view of the city). The library is located next to the Bullring which is a large shopping center for those of you that enjoy shopping. There are many shops to choose from and many places to eat close by. The city has many churches within walking distance, for those that are not religious the architecture of the churches is impressive to look at and each building holds so much history.

Studying at the University of Law

The University of Law provides legal education and has many different campuses around the United Kingdom. The university has tutors who are qualified lawyers with personal experiences that they pass on to their students. I believe that this is very valuable since the tutor can use examples from their past legal experiences to help you better understand a topic. The tutors at the university are very helpful and available every day to help with any questions you have about lectures, workshops, and readings.

The class sizes are small making it easier for the tutor to engage with the students and make sure every student understands what is being taught. The university has a silent library that is open every day from early morning to late night for students to have a silent place to study, as well as a cafeteria that has a computer lab in it where students can eat lunch and study.
