Study at King's College London

UK Tips

Hey there! If you’re reading this, you’re probably getting ready to make the big move to London. I know exactly how you’re feeling: that thrilling mix of excitement after getting your offer letter, alongside the panic of figuring out where to start with packing, flats, and navigating this massive city.

I did my MSc in Human Resource Management & Organisational Analysis at King’s College London, and after living through the whole experience of studying and settling here as an international student, here is the honest, friend-to-friend advice I wish someone had handed me before getting on the plane.

Accommodation

Don’t obsess over living right next to campus The classic rookie mistake is wanting to live in Zone 1 or 2 just to be "close to everything." Your bank account will take a massive hit. In London, distances aren't measured in miles, but in connectivity:

  • Living in Zone 3 or 4 is completely fine if you're right by an Overground or Elizabeth line station, or a direct tube line to your campus (commuting to Strand or Waterloo at King's from a well-connected area is seamless).

  • Golden rule: Never transfer money or sign a long-term lease without seeing the place in person. Book temporary accommodation for your first couple of weeks and attend viewings yourself to avoid scams, damp flats, or tiny rooms.

Finances & Daily Life

  • Set up your bank account on Day 1: Skip the traditional high-street banking paperwork. As soon as you arrive, set up a digital account like Monzo or Revolut. It takes 10 minutes on your phone, they mail your card to your temporary address, and you save a lot on international transfer fees.

  • The transport hack (vital): Moving around London adds up quickly. Buy a 16–25 Railcard (or 26–30 depending on your age). Then buy a physical Oyster card, ask a tube station staff member to link the Railcard to it, and you'll automatically get a 33% discount on all off-peak travel.

  • Smart grocery shopping: For your weekly staples, Lidl and Aldi will save your budget. If you go to Tesco or Sainsbury’s late in the afternoon, look for the yellow stickers for heavily discounted items.

The Master’s

  • Memorisation won't work: Lecturers aren't looking for a direct summary of the readings; they want to see your critical thinking. You need to challenge authors, compare perspectives, and build your own grounded arguments.

  • Deadlines and referencing are non-negotiable: Submission deadlines are strict, and referencing mistakes can cost you marks. Download Zotero or Mendeley during freshers' week; it will save your life when you're wrapping up 3,000-word essays at 11:50 PM.

  • The degree goes by in a flash: A one-year master's is over before you know it. The greatest return on your investment comes from the people and networks. Go to campus guest lectures, attend networking events, grab a pint with your cohort after class, and connect with people from around the world.

Health, Weather & Settling In

  • Register with a GP immediately: Don’t wait until you’re sick in bed to figure out the NHS. As soon as you have proof of address (a lease agreement or university student status letter), go online and register at your local GP surgery. It takes a couple of weeks to become active.

  • The London winter: The cold is manageable with layers and a solid waterproof coat (an umbrella is mostly useless when it's windy). What actually catches people off guard is the lack of daylight between November and January, when the sun sets by 4:00 PM. Take Vitamin D supplements, get outside for walks during midday sun, and keep up an active routine.

London can feel overwhelming during your first three weeks while you find your feet, but once you find your rhythm, it’s one of the most rewarding cities in the world for postgraduate study. Make the most of every single moment and enjoy the ride!
