Whatever the Weather – A Blog about British Climate Concerns

Leaving the comforts of sunny San Diego, California to come to the UK, which is infamous for its cloudy rainy days, was at first a challenge for me. I had been acclimated to 365 days of summer where the winter temperatures are comparable to UK’s summer weather! I wasn’t sure if it was going to be a good fit; and I couldn’t have been more wrong.

What I discovered, and what they don’t tell you in the brochures, is that from all the rain blossoms a beautiful earth. The landscape, when you’re outside the city of course, resembles a page right out of a fairy tail book with fifty shades of green (no, really, I’ve never seen so many different hues and tints and tones of green before in my life!). In West Yorkshire, it’s impossible to avoid stumbling upon greenway footpaths, parks and fields where you can soak in all the visual beauty that this country has offer. If for some reason you can’t seem to find a vantage point, just stop and ask a local and they are more than willing to point a fellow Yorkshire in the right direction (but, not before they ask whereabouts your unusual accent is from, which then I usually have a quipy response like, “This is a ‘proper’ Yorkshire accent. Can’t you tell?”)

If you’re ever feeling like, “Gee, I miss a good sunny day”, and you just want to talk about it, don’t worry, all people do here in the UK is talk about the weather! In fact, it’s what Brits are known for! (Seriously, check out this link because knowing how to talk about the weather ‘proper like’ is a big part of the culture here. And it’s fun!) Don’t let the rainy days keep you inside (as it doesn’t even affect the locals out here), as there is so much the UK has to offer and such a short amount of time to experience it all during your studies.

Although humans are naturally predisposed to resist and fear change, change is the only constant in life; so might as well embrace it. Crossing the pond and studying in the UK can be the positive change that prepares you for all future changes that are inevitably and irreversibly heading you way.
