A common misconception about American scholarships are that they cannot be used for students who wish to study in the UK.  This is mostly false.

As you will already know, scholarships are extremely competitive and shouldn’t be relied upon to cover the cost of studying abroad; however, there are a few schemes that you could apply for.

Marshall Scholarship

Up to forty specially-chosen scholars are selected each year to study at the graduate level at a UK university in any field of the student’s choice. The study costs for these students are completely covered by the scheme, but as there are only forty spaces, this scholarships is extremely competitive.

Assessment for the scheme is made on academic merit, leadership potential and ambassadorial potential too. Learn more about the Marshall Scholarship scheme here.  Beware! The deadline for this scholarship is always October 1st the year before you plan to study.  Plan ahead.

Rotary International Scholarship

Rotary International is an organization dedicated to connecting leaders from all continents, cultures, and occupations to exchange ideas and take action in communities around the world.

Rotary offer Global Grants, which can be used to fund graduate-level studies. The minimum budget for a global grant scholarship is $30,000. Your academic or professional goals should align with the club’s six areas of focus:

  • Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution
  • Disease Prevention and Treatment
  • Water and Sanitation
  • Maternal and Child Health
  • Basic Education and Literacy
  • Economic and Community Development

The deadline for this application is rolling.

Santander Scholarship Scheme

The worldwide scheme from bank Santander supported over 28,000 students with scholarships and grants last year. The scheme offers a small sum towards your tuition costs and is available through a number of Across the Pond’s partner universities. More information on the scheme can be found on their Scholarship website here.

The Fulbright Scheme

Approximately twenty graduate scholarships are offered each year for academic work in any subject. These are of varying amounts and are often paid to students in instalments as a contribution to tuition fees.

The scheme has supported over 12,000 US nationals to study in the UK with some alumni members going on to become Nobel Prize winners and elected for US Congress.

Again, the deadline for this application is always October 15th the year before you plan to study.

Other scholarship schemes

The vast majority of other scholarships are administered directly by the university you choose to study at in the UK. If you’ve decided on a university for you, it’s worth submitting an application as soon as possible so you can compete for their scholarships.  Why?  Because in the UK, you must have an offer from the university before applying for their scholarships.
