Never go hungry again with our guide to dining out in the UK!

Here, we take you through an alphabetical list of some of the most affordable and delicious places for American students to eat out with friends without breaking the bank.

A for ASK Italian

  • Cost: £12 – £18 pp
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Description: A modern Italian restaurant chain serving stone-baked pizza and antipasti on wooden boards. Great for pasta lovers, as well.

B for Byron Burgers

  • Cost: £6.75 – £15
  • Cuisine: British
  • Description: These are burgers, British style! Expect nothing but the finest hamburgers, topped with deliciously cured bacon and a choice of extra toppings. Yum!

C for Chiquito

  • Cost: £15 – £20
  • Cuisine: Mexican
  • Description: Described as a ‘colorful chain restaurant dishing up a menu of Tex-Mex favorites’, this is the place to get your chilli fix!

D for Domino’s Pizza

  • Cost: £8 – £15
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Description: OK – so it may not be the most exciting of eateries, but we know at some point you’ll end up eating from one of the UK’s most popular pizza delivery companies!

E for Ed’s Easy Diner

  • Cost: £8 – £18
  • Cuisine: American
  • Description: Adopting the US diner atmosphere, the UK has embraced Ed’s classic diner food and 1950’s nostalgia. Think old-fashioned burgers and fries plus hand-dipped milkshakes!

F for Frankie & Benny’s

  • Cost: £10 – £18
  • Cuisine: American Italian
  • Description: This New York Italian restaurant offers steaks, pizzas, and even breakfast for you early risers, and has 200 locations across the UK.

G for Gourmet Burger Kitchen

Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK)
  • Cost: £5 – £11
  • Cuisine: British
  • Description: Ever tried a British burger? This chain offers rustic beef, chicken and even veggie burgers complete with chunky fries and delicious milkshakes.

H for Harvester

  • Cost: £8 – £15
  • Cuisine: British
  • Description: This family, farmhouse-style restaurant chain offers a wide selection of traditional British cuisine as well as a free salad with every dish.

I for Iguanas

  • Cost: £8 – £18
  • Cuisine: South American
  • Description: Las Iguanas offers Latin American inspired dishes including tapas, Brazilian xinxim and Mexican classics. Prepare for a red-hot meal!

J for Jamie’s Italian

  • Cost: £12 – £20
  • Cuisine: Anglo Italian
  • Description: The restaurant chain of famous TV chef Jamie Oliver serves rustic dishes inspired traditional Italian cuisines.

K for KFC

  • Cost: £5 – £10
  • Cuisine: American
  • Description: The fried chicken experts are in the UK too and very popular! If you crave that famous original recipe chicken, you’re never far from KFC.

L for La Tasca

  • Cost: £15 – £30
  • Cuisine: Spanish
  • Description: An authentic Spanish restaurant with all the vibrancy of Madrid and Barcelona combined. Tapas and paella make for brilliant sharing dishes here.

M for McDonalds

  • Cost: £2 – £6
  • Cuisine: American
  • Description: Resolve your Big Mac craving at one of over 1,250 restaurants in the UK. A warning though – expect smaller portions, whatever you order!

N for Nandos

Nando's Peri-Peri Restaurant
  • Cost: £6 – £15
  • Cuisine: Portuguese
  • Description: Nandos locations have begun cropping up in the US, and the chain has been popular in the UK for over 25 years. Serving Portuguese peri-peri chicken in a variety of ways, this is a must-visit for spice lovers.

O for Options

P for Pizza Express

  • Cost: £8 – £15
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Description: Love pizza? Who doesn’t?  This is the place in the UK for the freshest and most exciting flavor combinations. Look out for their dough balls, they’re delicious!

Q for Queues!

OK – so, there isn’t a restaurant chain in the UK beginning with ‘Q,’ but we’ve used this space to tell you that the British use the word ‘queue’ instead of  ‘line’ – something that will come useful when dining out.

R for Restaurant pubs

  • Cost: £8 – £18
  • Cuisine: British
  • Description: Pubs are a staple of British culture, serving not just a great variety of beers and ciders, but also typically British food like fish and chips and steak pies.

S for Slug & Lettuce

  • Cost: £7 – £15
  • Cuisine: British
  • Description: Don’t let the name put you off! The Slug & Lettuce is a smart chain pub with a classic British menu.

T for TGI Friday’s

  • Cost: £8 – £15
  • Cuisine: American
  • Description: This New York diner serving seared meats fresh from the grill has made a big impact in the UK. Expect the same great customer service as you get in the US.

U for Upper Crust

  • Cost: £3 – £8
  • Cuisine: British
  • Description: Described as the ‘baguette specialists’, Uppercrust is a snack takeaway service for people on the go – usually found in train stations.

V for Valerie

Patisserie Valerie
  • Cost: £8 – £20
  • Cuisine: French
  • Description: Patisserie Valerie serve light meals and fancy pastries and cakes perfect for afternoon tea. This is a place for chocolate lovers to really indulge.

W for Wagamama

  • Cost: £12 – £20
  • Cuisine: Japanese
  • Description: A contemporary take on Japanese food, Wagamama serves ramen, teppanyaki, curry dishes, and complimentary green tea.

X marks the spot

OK, so there isn’t an ‘X’ either, but why not bookmark this blog, or print it out , and mark off each restaurants you try while you are studying in the UK?

Y for Yo Sushi

  • Cost: £5 – £15
  • Cuisine: Japanese
  • Description: Another Japanese restaurant, but these guys dedicate their time to fresh sushi. Enjoy serving yourself from the ‘sushi treadmill’ that winds its way across the entire restaurant, laden with everything from seaweed salad to sashimi!

Z for Zizzi

  • Cost: £10 – £20
  • Cuisine: Italian
  • Description: Zizzi’s is most well-known for its pizzas, but be sure to check out their seafood and fresh pasta dishes.
