How to Make the Most of Your Advisor During the Visa Process

The visa process can be one of the scariest parts of your study abroad journey, but when you use Across the Pond, have no fear! Your advisor is there to help guide you through the visa journey. I’m going to tell you about three ways I used my advisor during my own visa process.

The Pre-Application

I used my advisor to help me manage my materials checklist and double check that everything was ready and followed UK government policies. I double checked my loan letters, CAS, acceptance letters, and even passport photos to make sure everything was right and ready. (For those of you that are worried about photo regulation, I used Walgreens and they were perfect!)

The Application

Once all your materials are ready, and the application process can begin, your advisor will email you two documents: A visa application guidance, and a sample visa application. Use these! ATP Advisors also recommend students read through the UK Gov guidance as well, but their advice also breaks down the main points and can make the legal language more manageable! The sample application is a huge help, as you can see what each section of your application will look like and it has explanations of tricky questions!

The Post Application

I was a nervous wreck after my application and having an advisor who could tell me that my application was progressing normally and advise me about what kind of communication I could expect next saved my mental health. Forward all emails you get about your visa to your advisor. They’ll be able to tell you what is normal and advise if there’s any issue on what you can expect next.
