Queen Margaret University , Edinburgh (QMU) was established in 1875 and has around 4,000 students. Since its inception, QMU has made a crucial and distinctive contribution to education, by focusing its expertise on issues of pressing social need and by engaging directly with the community, while demonstrating agility in adapting to the rapidly changing agenda for research-led higher education. The Universities courses cover many specializations within health care, business and management, social sciences, drama and theatre arts, reflecting the vocational and professional emphasis of the institution. Our small size means that we can offer a friendly and supportive environment for our students.

QMU has just moved to the first new university campus for 21st century Scotland, on the south-east side of Edinburgh, by Musselburgh.  Musselburgh is a pretty coastal town and is East Lothian’s largest and rapidly expanding town. The campus is positioned between Musselburgh Station and Newcraighall, home of the Fort Kinnaird shopping complex. The new campus will be a vibrant academic village with high-tech buildings and attractive landscaped spaces. The campus includes student residences, a student union building, indoor sports facilities and all weather surfaces, a variety of catering outlets, a shop, a nursery, and landscaped gardens with a range of environmental features.

The new campus will be a 24/7 learning environment, where facilities will include a learning resource centre, combining IT and library services with flexible learning and teaching spaces. The design takes full account of the needs of 21st century students and of the specific requirements of QMU’s students. Examples of this are the multipurpose laboratories and clinics planned to support the learning of students of the allied health professions, and the studio theatre where all students will be able to enjoy performances put on by those studying drama and the creative industries.

Around 12 per cent of students studying at QMU are international and come from more than 50 different countries. The Recruitment and International Liaison Office offers a support service for the growing international student population, operating an open-door policy to ensure that students have access to all the information and advice they need.

The first week before classes start is a chance for international students to settle into their new environment. There are introductory talks in order to welcome students to the University, and to give out other information on topics such as life in Scotland and the Fresh Talent Scheme. Students can take part in various events including a bus tour of the city of Edinburgh. Other events are organized throughout the year, giving students the opportunity to get together.
