Founded in 1495 as Columbus was opening up the New World, the University of Aberdeen is one of the UK’s most internationally distinguished universities and within the top 200 higher education institutions worldwide, with a superb reputation going back many centuries.
In 1999, to mark the start of its sixth century of existence, the University of Aberdeen launched the biggest fundraising program ever undertaken by a Scottish University. Facilities are outstanding, and Aberdeen is currently investing nearly $500 million on infrastructure and facilities for students, including a world-class library and an Olympic standard sporting facility. Academics are leaders in their field, which means that students are being taught by some of the best. The University continues to create new Chairs in a range of disciplines, as we continue to gather a community of the world’s leading academics to take forward our ambitious academic strategy.

With over 240 US students currently on campus, Aberdeen has benefited significantly from positive word of mouth within the US market. This is in addition to the increasing recognition of the benefits of an international educational experience in a country where there are many heritage links, and the affordability of studying in Scotland (see fact box below) makes it increasingly cost effective. As with all international students, Americans bring a different cultural identity to the campus. It’s important that all students are fully integrated to life within the University, as we actively promote an international living and working environment, with students from over 120 countries represented within the student body.

All single international students are guaranteed a single occupancy room in University Halls of Residence for at least the first year of study. There is a huge variety of extra curricular and voluntary opportunities available with over 150 clubs and societies based on campus, from the Scottish Dancing Society to the Underwater Hockey Club.
As a place, Aberdeen is able to offer students the big city feel while still small enough to offer a very friendly, student-city atmosphere, and it is this that US students comment on most. It is also one of the most dynamic, prosperous and beautiful regions in the UK, with miles of golden sandy beaches and coast as well as nearby countryside, castles and distilleries. US Students adapt well to a compact and close-knit campus on the door step of a great European city.
