Sheffield, University of

The University of Sheffield is one of the UK’s best universities and a truly global university - currently home to over 27,000 students from 143 countries. As a member of the UK’s Russell Group, Sheffield has a reputation for world-class teaching and research excellence across a wide range of subjects. All of Sheffield's teaching is research led which means that you are being taught by the academics carrying out pioneering research. Given that 85% of the university's research is classed as internationally excellent or world-leading (REF 2014), you know that you’re in good hands.

One of the best things about Sheffield is the combination of academic excellence as well as a fantastic student experience. In UK universities, the Students’ Union is the center of student life and activities, and Sheffield's Students’ Union is consistently rated the best in the UK. For many of the international students, this is what makes their experience so memorable. Located in the heart of the campus, the Students’ Union has shops, cafes and bars which are open seven days a week, from breakfast into the night. There are club nights every night of the week attracting big name DJs and bands from around the world. There is a bank, support services and even a movie theater. There are also over 300 clubs and societies based in the Students’ Union.

Sheffield is England’s fourth largest city and is one of the UK’s most popular places for students to go to university. It is located in the north of England and London is just over two hours away by train.  It’s a rich, diverse, multicultural city and two of the words that people most often use when describing the city are ‘friendly’ and ‘green’.  When you take into account that Sheffield has some of the lowest living costs in the UK and approximately 10% percent of the whole city’s population is made up of students – you can start to understand why it's such a good place to be.

In Sheffield you can enjoy sophisticated fast-paced city life and be in the middle of beautiful Peak District countryside in 20 minutes. Whether you want to sip a latte at one of the many independent coffee shops, attend the summer music festival ‘Tramlines’, or visit the llama farm, you will quickly find something that you love about Sheffield too.

Facilities

The university campus is a mixture of the traditional and modern. It stretches from the city centre towards Sheffield's green suburbs. Sheffield is continually investing in facilities and £134 million has just been invested into improving engineering facilities, including the biggest ever investment in learning and teaching – the Diamond. This is an £81 million new engineering building which has 19 laboratories that offer practical learning experiences for undergraduate students as well as a 24 hour state-of-the-art library facility for all students.

Sheffield has also invested heavily in student housing facilities and has been voted as having the best accommodation in the UK for the last two years running (Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey). Sheffield offers a range of housing options, with and without dining plans, in a variety of locations from the city center to the leafy green suburbs of the city. There are even some rooms in a renovated church!
