We are pleased to announce that one of our university partners, the University of Exeter, has recently been rated Gold for their teaching quality.  This rating is the result of the UK government's national Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).

The Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) is a very ambitious program to assess the quality of teaching, learning environment and the outcomes for students completing higher education in each UK higher education institute.

The aim is not only to inform prospective students but also to encourage institutions to raise their performance. Exeter believes that by investing in their students and in working in partnership with them, they can create international graduates of distinction who will go on to make their own significant contribution to society.

TEF is an annual exercise and looks at a set of bench-marked quantitative data about the experience and outcomes for their students, and a 15-page, qualitative case for excellence that each university has created. These two pieces of information were considered and reviewed by a group of independent assessors, made up of academics, students and employers. They were asked to recommend a rating of a provider’s performance (either Gold, Silver or Bronze). All of these recommendations were then reviewed by the TEF Panel who came to an overall measure of teaching excellence for each institution.

Exeter’s Gold rating takes into account their teaching, programs, facilities and their students' success.  Exeter was particularly praised for the following:

  • Outstanding commitment to ensuring positive outcomes for all students
  • Use of business, industry and professional experts in their teaching
  • Outstanding teaching environments
  • The highest quality support for independent study and research
  • Maintaining optimum levels of contact hours and class size

This means Exeter is now recognized for excellence in both their teaching and our research.  (Ninety-eight percent of their research was rated as of “international quality” in the recent Research Excellent Framework of 2014).

Although TEF has only formally assessed their undergraduate teaching, we are confident that this Gold rating reflects the excellent level of teaching and student experience Exeter offer at all levels.
